My last dating experience was in November 2025. I’m not even sure I would call it a relationship, but it was definitely an experience—and it taught me that dating before 50 is not easy! He had recently gone through a divorce, and things seemed to be going well at first. However, when I couldn’t go on our second date, he completely flipped. Somewhere in our text conversation, I also mentioned that I felt he wasn’t a very good communicator. For example, he told me he would call me on a Thursday, but he never did. When I asked why, he simply said he forgot. I told him that consistency was important to me and that I wanted to understand where we were going with this—whatever “this” was. LOL. The irony was that he then made a surprise plan for that weekend, and I had to explain to him that what he had done was not acceptable to me. His response was that he was only human, that he was allowed to make mistakes, and then he hit me with, “I think you set too high of a standard.” And he call the date off and left me with, "later." Later, in December, we had plans to do a gift exchange. I put a lot of thought into the gift I chose for him, so when we met up and I saw that his gift seemed like the complete opposite, I was disappointed. More than the gift itself, it felt like he was trying to get back at me or make me feel like I was the problem—that somehow I was the one who needed healing. I tried my hardest to take accountability for my part and express how I felt, but I didn’t feel like he was really listening or trying to understand my perspective. The whole situation was awful and left me feeling emotionally drained. After that, he never called me again. Looking back, as difficult as the experience was, I think it taught me a lot about what I need in a relationship—especially communication, consistency, accountability, and being with someone who is willing to actually listen. When is having high standards a problem for a man?
