I recently adopted to FIV positive kitties. They are not related, but they lived in the same sequestered room in their foster home. I'll be sharing little events from the life of each of them. Galli is the one I was less sure of. She would hiss at Sweet Little Nugget simply for existing. She wanted nothing to do with her. And sometimes she would just start yelling and escalating for no reason that anyone could discern, except the traumas of her past. So here's a tale from the very early days. She's only been with me 3 weeks as I write 🐾 Lessons from Galli: You can't rush trust When Galli first came home, she only came out at night. I'd wake up in the morning and discover little clues. A toy had moved. The food bowl was emptier. Someone had explored while the house was quiet. Little by little, she began staying out a little longer. One evening she was halfway through the kitchen when she noticed me. She froze. I froze. Every part of me wanted to say, "It's okay! Come here!" But I didn't. Instead, I looked away and went back to what I was doing. A few moments later, she took another step. Then another. That reminded me of something we often forget as sensitive people. Trust cannot be rushed. Not with people. Not with animals. Not even with ourselves. When we've lived through difficult experiences, our nervous system is constantly asking one question: "Is it safe?" Not because it's weak. Because it's wise. Real trust isn't built by convincing. It's built through hundreds of tiny moments that quietly answer: "Yes... you're safe here." Whether you're learning to trust another person, your intuition, or yourself, don't despise the small steps. Every tiny brave moment matters. Galli is teaching me that healing doesn't happen because someone tells us we're safe. It happens because we experience safety often enough that our nervous system begins to believe it.
