This month’s theme is “Art Museum,” and the week’s topic is “6th-grade Ratios.” PROBLEM: Students from Opal Smith Elementary School were going on a field trip to the Museum of Illusions. The school required 1 adult chaperone for every 10 students. If there were 140 students going on the field trip, how many adult chaperones were needed? SOLUTION: 1. The clue words “for every” tell you it is a ratio problem - 1 adult:10 students. 2. Use the Create a Table strategy. Label one column “Adults” and the other “Students.”  See the table below to see where to put the numbers. 3. How to change 10 to 140? 140 divided by 10 is 14, so multiply both numbers in the ratio by 14. 4. For the “Adults” column, multiply 1 by 14 to get 14. For the “Students” column, multiply 10 by 14 to get 140. 5. Final solution: You need 14 adult chaperones for 140 students.
