Dialogue Writing Prompt: A Farewell Disguised as Small Talk
Two friends talk about tomorrow’s weather. One knows they’re leaving for good. Write ten lines without letting either say goodbye. Show what each person avoids. Set a timer and write for 15 minutes. You can use characters from your current project or start with someone new. If you’d like, share a few lines or tell us which unspoken feeling shaped the conversation. Please keep excerpts within our community guidelines, and offer critique only when the writer asks for it. Elle

Capturing Autumn
Sadie could feel the warmth of the sun on her skin as sĥe turned over in her bed. Mmmmm another nice day she thought. I wonder if? Leaning over to the bedside table she scooped up her phone and sent a text to her neighbour. "You up for a tree shoot? Suns out, and it feels a bit warmer today." It was late autumn and the leaves on the trees were turning lovely shades of burnt orange and gold, some a warm shade of rich red wine. Sadie rose to get showered and dressed. Ping! She was dressing when she heard a text message come through. Picking up her phone she read, "Yep! Sounds good to me. Meet you out front in half and hour" "OK, don't forget your walking boots, it's muddy from all the rain yesterday" she replied. Ping! "Sure thing" came the reply Suitably dressed and booted up, Sadie grabbed her last slice of toast off the breakfast bar, scooped up her camera bag, coat and keys and headed for the door, just as her neighbour Maddie pulled a silly, grinning face at the window. "Morning! I'll drive today" shouted Maddie. Sadie stepped outside, popped her keys in her jeans pocket, shrugged her shoulders and cocked her head as she replied "I wont argue with that" Placing their camera bags in the boot along with their warm coats; in case it turned cool. They high fived each other and got in the car. Maddies car was warm from the morning sun and smelled of ripe cherries. Sadie looked over, fondly, and smiled at her besty. 12 years they had been friends. They were like two peas in a pod, yet so different in personality. Sadie, quiet and thoughtful, Maddie, boisterous and outgoing. "Where we off to?" Maddie asked. "Usual place, but park over by Rose Cottage, the trees are more colourful down that end of the woods" Sadie replied. "Okeedokee, will do" Maddie replied. They drove in silence the short journey to Rose Cottage. Sadie was hoping Marty would be having a layin this fine Sunday morning, as she did not want to face him after their conversation last night. Maddie slowed down and the car pulled up after the entrance to Rose Cottage.
