but where the goal is centred around a 1rm in a particular lift, I find it hard to move away from the top sets because I love them so much haha

Honestly its a boring answer, but it usually comes down to just scaling back into the task that gave it to you appropriately. General strength training is also extra important when you can't do the athletic stuff to maintain the area, but anything else is usually a distraction
