When I was watching the Marimba session, Owen was happily freestyling loads of gorgeous melodies. I can't play keys - I've learned some VERY basic scales but the music I write often has lots of intra-melodies and although I can freestyle them in my head, I often lose them because I can't translate that into notes in a piano roll quickly enough. What I realised was a hack is to: - get my cans on and sing the melodies along to the track (to stay in time) - upload that vocal recording into my DAW alongside the rest of the track - right click "export to MIDI" - use that midi file to drive a synth patch - pick the best bits and tweak synth to taste That way I can very quickly preserve the freestyle melodies and work on the patches to bring them to life. There are tools out there that do this but they are typically expensive and can hammer CPU. I use FL but pretty sure they'll all have this feature Hope that's useful to some one, and if anyone else has any ideas (other than learning to play the piano!) I'd love to hear how you tackle it
