I saw a mountain, you know, across the horizon. And I got there, realized it was just a pile of rocks.

Performance Review
I’m looking forward to my upcoming performance review and presenting my detailed outline of why I deserve increased compensation. I feel like I have a lot of leverage in the negotiation which is a great feeling going into it. Curious to hear people’s thoughts/advice when it comes to performance reviews and asking for a raise.

Thanks Jordy - This is awesome insight and super valuable advice. I definitely have the data and facts prepared which feels super reassuring to have scaffolding me in the negotiation. I’m currently workshopping my approach to cultivating a team oriented tone to the conversation. I’m toying with a couple angles to take but whichever I do take I’ll make sure it feels inclusive and collaborative. Last thing I want is to come off as entitled, self centered, or demanding. I’ve been working super diligently at making myself as irreplaceable as possible in an effort to both provide value to the company and harness leverage for future negotiations. This thought experiment definitely contributes to more confidence and assurance. I’ve researched the market and have some data points ready to go to justify that my ask is within reason as it relates to what similar roles within the industry are compensated. It may sound like a simple step but it made me feel so much more validated knowing that what I’m asking is within the acceptable range of what similar positions in this area and industry are compensated. Last thought… The worst thing that can happen is ‘no’. That won’t be the outcome, I’ll definitely get a raise. But ultimately it boils down to this in my opinion… whatever the outcome is (if my ask is met or, if not, how close I’m met to my ask), it will be valuable information in and of itself for future decision making.

We got the dub. Trust the process. Prepare painstakingly. Advocate for yourself. Hard work pays off. Cheers
A quote along with some following thoughts
Recently in my life I have been involved in more activities that can feel daunting, difficult, and in the moment sometimes redundant. Whether in the weight room, workplace, classroom, etc. I have noticed myself, along with many others, begin to approach these activities as a tedious and unfortunate chore that I just need to check off the list to gain a gold star to stick on my forehead. It has been an intentional effort of mine to begin to feel grateful for all these moments, and feed on them going forward and here is why: “Anyone can love a flower, but it takes a certain mindset to love a leaf. It’s ordinary to appreciate the beautiful, but it is beautiful to love and appreciate the ordinary.” Some examples in life that I have noticed when I have appreciated the ordinary, and considered it a blessing: -What a blessing to get to wake up this early -What a blessing to have to get to sleep early -What a blessing to be this busy -What a blessing to have a drained social battery -What a blessing to get to learn this much -What a blessing to be able to complete this difficult workout -What a blessing to feel bloated from overeating -What a blessing to have this many people to miss -What a blessing to be exhausted after a long day of work -What a blessing to feel scared about the future Some of these may feel rough in the moment, but realizing the reasons for which you are doing these things can remind you why they are so worth while, and why for that reason you are so blessed.

What a blessing to read this post. What a blessing to know that we’re not alone in our struggles. What a blessing to be alive.
Great quote
“There is no problem so complex, nor crisis so grave that it cannot be satisfactorily resolved within 20 minutes.” - Winston Churchill Great quote to think about when life gets hard. This man was leading a nation under attack during WW2 and he believed this quote.

The added context of WW2 really amplifies the power of this quote. I’m gonna carry this with me into the day tomorrow.
Zoom out
This is a reminder to myself mostly and to anyone else who may skew towards getting caught up in the stresses of day to day life…. We have it so unbelievably good. Even amidst our pains and fears and uncertainties, life is so full. Our time here is just a blip. Steward relationships. Get sunshine. Move your body. Take risks. Get back up when you fall down. Take a deep breath. Zoom out.
