That is a great analogy @Justin Peach ! My thoughts on this is the direct connection to the 2nd Precept of Reiki: "Do not worry". If you think about it: Building energetic shields, protection rituals, etc. is one of many "symptoms" of worry. Because who internalised the 2nd precept to its fullest, does not need such measures. I believe if we stick to these patterns, we can take them as an invite to ask ourself "why do I have this worry in the first place? Where does it come from" But then, on the other hand: I am also thinking that for some people - regardless of the reasons - those "protection" actions might be like a tool to regulate the own nervous system. The analogy I use for that is a little kid that needs a teddy-bear that protects him/her from the monsters in the closet at night to be able to sleep. Even if you tell the kid that there are no monsters (and even if there were, the teddy bear is just a piece of cloth and won't be able to do anything), it wouldn't change a thing about how the kid's nervous system functions and the kid's imagination connected to the teddy helps him/her to feel better with that teddy bear. At the bottom of the line, I think that for spiritual people, protection rituals are like this teddy bear - but "spiritual maturity" (a word I just made up 😅) in my understanding means reaching the point when we are ready to look at the fears beyond these habits and eventually, slowly, letting go of the teddy, as we realise that there is actually nothing to be afraid of, except from the stories our mind comes up with 🧸 This being said. I've been on a spiritual journey for 25 years now. But only the last 7 of them, I dared to walk without the teddy 🙂
