We read in Ezekiel 34 The leaders of Israel had let the flock down, and the Lord said, "I will myself look for my sheep and search for them... I will look for the lost and bring back those who had been driven away; I will bind up the broken and strengthen those who are sick" (Ezekiel 34-11-12,16). In a similar way, Yeshua now appears before leaders of the same kind and tells a story about a shepherd carrying out exactly those actions. This is not merely a pastoral image; it reveals who He is. Luke (15:4-6)“What man among you, if he has a hundred sheep and loses one of them, does not leave the ninety-nine in the pasture and go after the one that is lost, until he finds it? And when he finds it, he joyfully puts it on his shoulders, comes home, and calls together his friends and neighbors to tell them, ‘Rejoice with me, for I have found my lost sheep!’ Look at the phrase "until he finds it". He doesn't search carelessly or turn back when the ground becomes difficult. Instead, He keeps going until He finds the lost person. That is what persistent love means. When He sees the sheep, He does not beat it, scold it, or make it go home ashamed, but instead puts it on His shoulders. That is the way shepherds throughout the land have for centuries carried a tired lamb, wrapping it across the back of the neck and holding its legs in front. It is the Shepherd's strength, not that of the sheep, which enables the return. As Isaiah said concerning the coming Son, "the government will be upon His shoulder" (Isaiah 9:6). It is the same shoulders on which the government of heaven rests that carry you home. He does this with joy. The Shepherd is not annoyed at having had to go looking; instead, he is overjoyed and says, "Rejoice with me, for I have found my sheep." Heaven responds to repentance by celebrating. The Shepherd was searching and still is. There are various reasons why people go away. A few do so out of rebellion, while others move about because of pain, disappointment, exhaustion, or injuries which they never knew how to bear.

Taking up your cross brings all five words into practice: submit, yield, commit, humble, and deny. They describe the heart of a disciple; taking up your cross means living out that surrender, even when following Jesus costs you something. Jesus said in Luke 9:23 (KJV): “If any man will come after me, let him deny himself, and take up his cross daily, and follow me.” For Jesus’ original listeners, the cross represented execution, shame, and suffering. His invitation calls for wholehearted allegiance—even at the cost of comfort, reputation, or life. It goes deeper than simply enduring everyday inconveniences. 1. Submit—Accept His authority. Taking up your cross begins with accepting Jesus as Lord. You obey His direction even when it conflicts with your preferences. “Lord, Your will has authority over my will.” 2. Yield—Make yourself available. You present your body, words, choices, and abilities to God. Taking up your cross means allowing that surrender to shape what you actually do. “Lord, I am available to obey You, even when it is uncomfortable.” 3. Commit—Entrust the outcome to Him. Obedience does not guarantee immediate approval or relief. You trust God with the consequences of faithfully following Him. Jesus modeled this by entrusting Himself to the One who judges justly (1 Peter 2:23). “Lord, I will obey and trust You with the outcome.” 4. Humble—Lay aside pride and status. Pride insists on recognition and having the final word. Humility makes room for serving, receiving correction, and obeying God without applause. Philippians 2:8 connects Jesus’ humility directly with His obedience unto death on the cross. “Lord, pleasing You matters more than protecting my image.” 5. Deny—Renounce self-rule. Jesus places denying yourself immediately before taking up your cross. You refuse to let your desires become your highest authority. That can mean refusing revenge, turning from sin, or choosing faithfulness over convenience. “Lord, my desires will not govern my obedience to You.”

Matthew 13:44 “Again, the kingdom of heaven is like treasure hidden in a field, which a man found and hid; and for joy over it he goes and sells all that he has and buys that field." Scripture uses the word matmon (מַטְמוֹן) for this kind of treasure. It comes from a word that means to hide or bury. Proverbs 2:4 talks about searching for wisdom "as for hidden treasures." Solomon promises that those who search will find the knowledge of God. In ancient times, when armies came, families buried their valuables and sometimes never returned. Fields could hide secrets, and a plow might uncover a fortune. Yeshua is saying the Kingdom is like that — a discovery that can turn an ordinary day into the day your life changes. This is what revelation does. Before the treasure is seen, selling everything looks reckless. After the treasure is seen, holding on to everything else looks reckless. Nobody had to pressure this man. Nobody preached him into it or made him feel guilty. What he saw was worth so much that he was moved, and joy did the rest. The Kingdom has always worked this way. It's why fishermen left their nets and Matthew walked away from the tax booth. They weren't grim recruits paying a hard price. They had seen the King, and suddenly the nets looked small. Paul said it plainly in Philippians 3:8 he counted all things loss for the surpassing worth of knowing His Lord. He wasn't celebrating loss. He was celebrating what he had gained. Also notice that the man buys the whole field. In Scripture, land is more than just soil. It stands for inheritance, covenant, and a future for your children. When Jerusalem was under siege and the land seemed worthless, the Lord told Jeremiah to buy a field in Anathoth, sign the deed, and seal it in a clay jar. The reason was this: "houses and fields and vineyards shall be possessed again in this land" {Jerimiah 32:15}. Buying the field was a prophetic act. It showed, "I believe what God has hidden here." That is what faith looks like. Sometimes we want the treasure but not the field, the promise but not the process, the glory but not the surrender. But this man accepts the rocks, weeds, and ordinary land along with the treasure, because he knows what is hidden there. Some times of obedience will seem ordinary, and some will be costly. But when you know what is buried there, you stop thinking about the cost and start thinking about the treasure.
