To my delight and surprise recently, my youngest son wanted to read a Portuguese book at bedtime. It was Pinocchio as it turned out (em Portugues: 'Pinóquio') and we read it together. The beautiful thing was not only the chance to sit and read with one of my children, but also how much I realised I understood and was able to explain to him. This is the 'collateral' benefit of the other work I've been doing; interesting because I don't read much Portuguese, consciously or purposefully. I tend to learn through other means, primarily through speaking and engagement, SWAT-style! This was a lovely option, or complementary activity, which I thoroughly recommend to you, and I'm interested to know what your reading matter is. This from the Monday morning briefing yesterday and prompted by @Brian Mathers (muito obrigado) and recognised by us all - a new FREE mission module for the "deer in the headlights moment", the 'confrontation' before the 'conversation' - introducing the ladder method... Here's the problem: almost everyone has this exact and AWKWARD gap. Not a lack of vocabulary - a genuine blank the moment "bom dia" runs out. You said it, they said it back, and then... nothing. Door knocked, nobody answered. #BeyondBomDia is built as a ladder - four small rungs past the greeting: 1. The greeting itself (where most of us stop) 2. A genuine observation ("está um lindo dia, não está?") 3. A real question ("como tem passado?") 4. A proper exchange ("e então, o que me conta?") It also borrows something we heard about from the conversation nights in Caldas - the 'copos' & conversation idea. For us, one rule: nobody's allowed to just say bom dia and walk away. Every greeting has to earn at least one real line back before the conversation's allowed to end. Worth trying with your own buddy or a small group. And when the ladder runs out again - because it will, that's fine - that's exactly where the panic phrases from Yikes! What Now?! earn their keep. Os romanos estiveram cá, os mouros também. Em 1148, o Rei Afonso Henriques reconquistou a vila para Portugal. Em 1282, o Rei D. Dinis deu a vila inteira à sua mulher, a Rainha Isabel, como presente de casamento - começando uma tradição que durou sete rainhas e mais de cinco séculos. 💡 Imaginem receber uma vila medieval como presente de casamento. "Diga!" - it's what a Portuguese person says when they pick up the phone or when a shopkeeper turns to you. Literally "speak!" So please, speak... This thread is where you introduce yourself. Not in English - in Portuguese. Don't know where to start? Use the pitch builder: https://swatportuguese.com/prazer-pitch Pop in your name, age, where you live and a few things about yourself, and it'll build you a bilingual elevator pitch you can actually say out loud. (Takes about a minute) Then do three things: 1. Post it here - Portuguese first, English underneath if you like. 2. Say it out loud - to your phone, to the mirror, to the dog. Reading it isn't the same as saying it. (Bonus points: record it and post the audio. Terrifying, effective.) 3. Say it to an actual Portuguese person this week - a neighbour, a café, the person at the till. That's the real assignment. And read a few others before you go. Comment on someone else's in Portuguese, even if it's just "Muito prazer!" or "Bem-vindo!" - that's a real exchange, and it counts. (Nobody's marking this.
