Build ups not sounding energetic enough
Hi there! I’m having a hard time making my buildups hit harder before the drop. It feels like there’s no energy or anticipation, and the transition into the drop ends up sounding weak. I’ve tried using risers, drum rolls, and even cutting the kick right before the drop, but it’s still not giving me that explosive impact I’m going for. I’m producing a festival-style big room track, so I really want the buildup to get people hyped. How do you create that massive tension in your buildups? Any tricks or techniques for layering sounds or arranging them to really push the energy?

@Martin Raay Thank you for the insight! I really appreciate the breakdown—it’s exactly the guidance I needed. I’ll definitely take you up on the session and book it through my membership so we can dive into my project personally. Looking forward to learning your techniques firsthand and applying them to elevate my tracks.

New to the game
Hey all Brand new in the music production game here and following along on the Calvin Harris course to learn how Logic and EDM production works. Quite a few of the tools that were free when the course was made are now paid and relatively expensive for a beginner who is dipping their toe in the water; I don't want to commit $250 for Nexus or $50 for Cthulhu etc. Are there some free alternatives that people would recommend? Apologies in advance if this has been answered before but I searched in the community section and couldn't find anything. Thanks

@Martin Raay Absolutely, I agree Nexus can be quite an investment. Serum has really taken the lead for EDM sounds, and its versatility is impressive. Alchemy is a hidden gem as well; it’s amazing how many high-quality sounds it offers that capture the essence of Nexus. It’s all about finding the right tool that sparks your creativity.
EQ and still muddy?
I’m struggling with low-end muddiness, even after EQing. Any tips for getting a clean bass mix?

@Martin Raay Good point, Joann! You’re absolutely right the placement of the EQ in the chain can make a big difference in how the mix breathes. I always recommend experimenting with EQ before and after other effects to find what brings the best balance to your sound.

@Antonella Peter thanks for sharing! That’s a solid approach carving frequencies and layering a sub bass really makes a mix sit clean and punchy. I’d be happy to help take it further by crafting vocals or toplines that fit naturally in your mix, making the whole track shine even more. Let me know if you want to collaborate on this!
