Why do you want to learn a handstand?
Hi all! I'm Paula, from Lithuania and I'm excited to join this community! I first tried doing a handstand 10 years ago and since then attemped them in various dance/capoeira/circus classes but have never managed to achieve balance, so safe to say I feel quite frustrated 😵‍💫 But decided this year I'll focus on it and make it happen! My goal is to balance a 10-second freestanding handstand! And my question for you is why do you want to learn a handstand?

hey, welcome!
Hello!
Hey everyone — Sam Hoebel here. Based in Kansas City. I’m getting into hand balancing and calisthenics as a complement to my main training, which is primarily weight lifting and running. Excited to learn and build a solid handstand practice!. Question for the group: Curious how others structure their overall training — what’s your main form of exercise outside handstands, and how do you balance it with handstand practice?

Heyo welcome!

General impressions: Scissor kicks feel really good. Chest to wall feels terrible. I think I need to try and make MUCH finer movements. Every time I shift towards fingertips I overbalance. Back to wall feels much better than chest, but needs work. I seem more comfortable shifting towards palms without losing it. Freestanding feels 🤮! I think I’m getting in my head! Tentative action plan: 10 minutes of practice on first 3 movements, 30 minutes total, 3 times per week until I can 10 second holds on both wall balances consistently then retest freestanding, hopefully in 1-3 weeks. As always, any feedback is greatly appreciated 🙏.

First off, great job just sticking with it and putting in the work! I’ve been at it for over a year now and I still don't have a solid, consistent handstand. There are two things I noticed that I also personally struggled with: - 1) Pushing the floor away: You aren't pushing nearly hard enough away from the ground. - 2) Rushing the position: It feels like you’re in too much of a hurry to reach the final hold and you're losing focus on the intent of each drill. Especially with the wall exercises, it looks like you’re rushing to get away from the wall, which shifts your focus away from where it should be: the shoulders. You’re running into the same issue I did—constantly falling into overbalance. I suspect this happens because the shoulders aren't elevated enough; they collapse and shift too far past your hands. As soon as your legs follow, you fall over. What helped me: I started focusing entirely on shoulder elevation the exact moment my feet became light and were about to leave the wall. Keep it up! It’s only a matter of time as long as you keep working at it. We’ve got this! :D Here just a example where I'm just trying to not lose it in the shoulders.
Introduction
I’m a 43 year old husband, father to 8 and 3 year old daughters, physical therapist, former college baseball pitcher and center fielder, and movement enthusiast. I’m in Kirkland, WA (Seattle suburb and home to Costco) I’ve long wanted for 20+ years to be proficient in handstands (and bridges/walkovers), but only recently have decided to put in daily work. The combination of my 8 year old passing me in both skills, and an instagram video sent to me of the World Series MVP prioritizing both in his training have been a wake-up call that I plan to answer with commitment, dedication, and perseverance. I’m excited to be part of the community and grow with others. Let’s go! My goals are to enjoy the process, consistently put in the work, and (hopefully before I’m 50) do 1 straddle press to one arm straddle handstand. I also want to be able to sprint, jump, throw, and tumble better as I age.
