Flute Music by French Composers (Moyse)
This collection is often treated as repertoire, but it also functions as a training ground. Many of these works were written for students of the Paris Conservatory, shaped by the demands of the Prix de Rome era, where control, clarity, and consistency mattered as much as musical expression. Winning was one outcome. The deeper work was the ability to perform these pieces with composure, accuracy, and intent under pressure. This question is not about favorites or rankings. It is not an essay. Question: What aspects of the French Flute pieces edited by Moyse clearly demonstrate their etudinal nature? Please share specific examples, whether technical, musical, or structural, that illustrate how these works shape a flutistโ€™s development. New? Have you played any music from Flute Music by French Composers?

As much as I love these pieces now (French music is my JAM!), I used to hate practicing them way back when because they were deliberately hard and had such tricky things because they were test pieces hahaha. My poor teenage brain...

This started as a simple question and turned into a great discussion. Weโ€™re continuing it here so it doesnโ€™t disappear. If youโ€™ve played it, taught it, or think about it differently, share below.

@Dana Messick Awww, that's what's Skool's all about! What about putting together some virtual videos with flute friends?
What's one area of flute you still want to learn more about?
1) What's one area of flute you still want to learn more about, especially this year? 2) Do you have a plan for learning it? If so, do you mind sharing? We already have such a wealth of knowledge represented in the membership here! I'm super curious to see how the Classroom and Live Calls evolve. Hope we can get some of our questions answered.

I've got a fingering chart here that includes lot of 4th octave stuff in case that's helpful too! https://www.skool.com/flute-nerd-lab/classroom/4185f6b0?md=031d3680b6674c259f5e572a02e2c827
Welcome
This space is for flutists who want to think clearly, share honestly, and build their craft together. There is no roadmap posted yet. We will start by doing the work and paying attention to what takes shape. If you are here early, introduce yourself however you like. You can also just read for a bit. We will build from there.
