My Heart's in the Highlands for Jackie
Hey music friends. I wrote this melody for a Robert Burns poem for my mother-in-laws memorial coming up. I would love some feedback. I am hoping to bring a sense of goodbye and her love of Scotland.

I’ve been trained in classical technique, but I don’t have much knowledge of contemporary technique. I can do some things intuitively, but I’d like to understand what I’m doing and know if I’m doing it correctly I will appreciate a feedback here. I'm very happy to be part of this community.

How can i improve?
I feel really stuck, for now it’s been one year of practicing vocal exercises almost everyday for 30 minutes to 1 hour a day and i feel my throat a lot more free, but still i have a very cracky tone and off key, i want to sound very smooth and on key like Soul and Rnb singers do, Michael Jackson, R.Kelly, Beyonce, Celine Dion, Whitney Houston are my inspiration

I really like your voice Miguel! What I've realized as someone who loves rnb too, is that I used to choose song challenges that were way too fast in bpm for my technical skills at that time, songs that had a lot of fast shifting notes demanding a fast and short vibrato, before I had spent enough time training my vibrato and breath support to hold longer notes with a steady pitch in the slowest of songs. It's a bit like lifting more weight than our muscles can handle, and we lose that breath support and put strain on our vocal chords! When I realized this I started a different approach; either I choose a much slower song where it's easier for me to hear clearly which notes/syllables with vibrato that need "cleaning" and work, or I go to settings on my fast song of choice on YouTube, and I slow the play-speed down to almost slow motion, and break down the song to short pieces until I can sing the entire song in slow motion with confidence, and then gradually sing every litte piece faster until I can sing on the normal pace. Sometimes I've realized "I'm not there yet" but without the frustration I used to feel, because with generous teachers like Paul sharing their knowledge out there, we decode the secrets, and we know we'll get there one day if we stick to our singing routines with consistency. A fast song can take 10-20 times longer to work on than a slow song, before I get the results that I desire. We hear the result of singers with years and years of training singing those super fast rifs and runs in rnb. It's important to realize that they got there, not by magic, but through hard work. We honor them when we work as hard as they did to achieve what they've achieved. Faster bpm requires much more discipline and PATIENCE because we often get anxious about not getting it right fast enough. I realize I've repeated myself about this topic in several threads, but there are unfortunately no shortcuts in processes that take time. Good news is: it's all achievable! We can do it! <3

@Miguel Edler ā¤ļøšŸ™ That's the spirit! I've realized that self-esteem and motivation come as a natural result when we don't abandon our discipline or good routines/healthy habits. Motivation and self-esteem are nowhere to be found before the actual hard work, not in my case at least! It's a bit like raising a child; sometimes you think, "Is this really the human being I'M raising?!". And then there are those magic moments when, after years of sticking to a principle, you start seeing them apply it in their own lives...then all the work and patience feels like it worked out...you feel at least like a decent parent, and at least proud of yourself for never giving up on those you love. It's like that with singing for me. šŸ˜…

OMG! I can't believe I missed out on this! I'll be working this Saturday 25th too 😭. I can't wait to meet y'all! I'm thrilled about this community and the opportunity to support one another here. It motivates me so much! I studied music and voice as my main instrument 12 years ago, but I never pursued my profession as a music teacher. I ended up teaching a bunch of languages instead. So I feel blessed for finding Paul online and finding this online community. Peace & Blessings šŸ™ā¤ļø
Breath control and support
Does anyone have tips for breath control and support? Something is just not clicking for me. It may be decades of singing with bad habits…any tips appreciated! šŸ’œ
Breath control and support

Guuurl, your voice is beautiful! 🄰🤩 Just pick any daily routine for breath support and get the discipline to do at least 10 minutes a day. You'll feel a difference within a week. And then of course the discipline to break the song into small parts, SLOWING it down, and try and master the small details in every little part, one by one, instead of singing through the whole song over and over again. Any "mistake" you make stays recorded in your muscle memory. That's why it's important to break it down into smaller pieces in slow motion and then gradually faster and faster.

I feel ya! I've been running before I could walk my whole life, up until now. Now I've learned the hard way...to slow things down and pay attention to detail. Try putting the scale numbers on small pieces of that melody. ;-) Chat GPT can help you out if you have problems understanding the logic behind the numbers of the pentatonic scale, like Paul teaches us here. Look for an online keyboard if you don't have one at home to figure out exact notes.

I've been singing forever but now, in my 40s, I've decided that I want to be more disciplined about my voice training and I love Paul's method.
