Some tips are: plural verbs don’t end in an s, while singular verbs end in an s (for example, you would say she runs, but you would also say they run); semicolons and periods function similarly so if a grammar multiple choice question has a choice with a semicolon between the two clauses and a choice with a period between the two clauses, both of those choices are probably wrong; commas, em dashes, or parentheses can be used to separate nonessential clauses (for example: Cheetahs, the fastest land animals, can reach top speeds of 70 mph), and so on. Nonessential clauses are parts of a sentence that aren’t needed to understand it fully. In the example about cheetahs, the message would’ve been the same even if I didn’t clarify that they’re the fastest land animals.
