5 Day Challenge: Kickstart your career growth in just 5 days!
🌟 Welcome to the 5-Day Career Growth Challenge! 🌟 Are you ready to start your career growth journey? 🚀 This week, we're diving into a mini-bootcamp to kickstart your career advancement. Each day, you'll engage in activities designed to help you grow or determine if your current company supports your growth. 📈 Key Points to Keep in Mind: 1. Intentional Growth: Career growth doesn't just happen; it’s intentional. Promotions and raises should be part of your plan and supported by your company’s culture. 🎯 2. Employee and Supervisor Perspectives: Understand career growth from both the employee’s (YOU) and the supervisor’s viewpoints. Managers want promotable employees who perform well. 🏆 3. Company Culture: Recognize if your company values great work and is willing to promote or just aims to get the most from employees without recognizing their contributions. 🏢 Sometimes growth occurs just because you showed up. These are typical pay raises without a promotion, and generally have to do with inflation and cost of living. Don't confuse this raise (generally 3%) with what you can see during a promotion. Our goal is to have raises above and beyond these cost of living increases through the company paying you for the value you deliver. This also leads to a greater future for you. Example: Here is some quick info on raises: Reasons for Automatic Raises that don't involve promotions: - End of Probation: After 6-12 months. - First Review: After initial evaluations. - Cost of Living Adjustments (COLA): Annual raises to match living costs (typically 3-5%). - Parity Adjustments: Ensuring pay equity among employees in similar roles. 💼 Union-Based Promotions: - Note: Union-based promotions are generally based on contracts and are not the focus here. 🤝 Reasons for "Earned" raises: Now, let's talk about actually intentionally getting a raise/promotion. Reasons for Earned Raises: - Exceptional Performance: Consistently exceeding performance expectations and achieving outstanding results. - Taking on Additional Responsibilities: Voluntarily assuming extra duties or larger projects beyond your job description. - Skill Development and Certifications: Acquiring new skills, earning certifications, or completing advanced training relevant to your role. - Contribution to Company Goals: Directly contributing to the achievement of key company goals or metrics, such as increasing revenue or reducing costs. - Innovation and Problem-Solving: Proposing and implementing innovative solutions that improve processes, products, or services. - Leadership and Team Contribution: Demonstrating strong leadership skills, mentoring colleagues, and contributing positively to team dynamics. - Positive Feedback and Recognition: Receiving consistent positive feedback from supervisors, peers, and clients or customers. - Successfully Leading Projects: Leading successful projects that have a significant impact on the company. - Achieving Personal Performance Goals: Meeting or exceeding personal performance targets set during performance reviews. - Advocacy and Representation: Effectively representing the company at industry events, conferences, or in client meetings.

Day 4: The Game Plan - Putting Your and Supervisor's Info Together Today, we'll focus on synthesizing the feedback and insights you’ve gathered over the past few days to create a comprehensive action plan. This plan will serve as your roadmap for achieving your promotion goals. Introduction Your goal today is to develop a detailed, actionable game plan based on your self-assessment, supervisor’s feedback, and identified career goals. This plan will help you stay focused and organized as you work towards your promotion. Synthesis of Feedback 1. Review Your Self-Assessment: - Strengths: What are your top strengths that you can leverage? - Gaps: What areas do you need to improve? Your Answer: 2. Review Supervisor's Feedback: - Strengths: What did your supervisor identify as your key strengths? - Areas for Improvement: What areas did your supervisor suggest you need to focus on? Your Answer: 3. Identify Alignment: - Common Strengths: Where do your self-assessment and supervisor’s feedback align? - Common Gaps: What areas of improvement are common between your self-assessment and supervisor’s feedback? Your Answer: Action Plan Development 1. Set SMART Goals: - Specific: Clearly define what you want to achieve. - Measurable: Determine how you will measure progress. - Achievable: Ensure your goals are realistic. - Relevant: Align your goals with your career aspirations. - Time-bound: Set deadlines for achieving your goals. Example: - Goal: Improve public speaking skills. - Specific: Watch 5 youtube videos on public speaking, take notes on those, and create a checklist of what to work on.  Practice speaking with these skills on 5 videos of myself and review them with the checklist to ensure I accomplished the changes.  Rinse and repeat each week. - Measurable: Then, deliver three presentations at team meetings.  Ask for feedback. - Achievable: Allocate time each week for practice.  Put it on your calendar. - Relevant: Enhances leadership presence and improves company value. - Time-bound: Complete the videos within a week.  Give the presentations within the month.  Seek feedback after each.  Meet with supervisor at end of month with notes for review.

Day 5: Take Action - Implementing Every Day and Checking In Regularly Today, we'll focus on putting your action plan into motion and establishing a routine for regular check-ins with your supervisor. Consistent implementation and communication are key to ensuring your efforts are noticed and your progress is on track. Introduction Your goal today is to start taking actionable steps toward your promotion and to set up a system for regular progress check-ins with your supervisor. This will help you stay accountable and keep your supervisor informed of your efforts. Documenting your progress is incredibly important so when you sit with your supervisor or HR to discuss promotions, you are prepared. Nothing happened unless it was documented. This also prepares you for the future of supervision. I find that a great way of documentation is with google docs and google calendar entries. Open a doc that is about your growth and simply put new entries each day like a journal. List the date and take notes. Use key words so you can sort with them. Also stick to a process such as repeating the action plan, steps daily, and outcomes. Daily Implementation 1. Review Your Action Plan: - Revisit your SMART goals and action steps from Day 4. - Identify tasks you can start working on immediately. 2. Prioritize Your Tasks: - Use a daily planner or to-do list to prioritize your tasks. - Focus on high-impact activities that align with your promotion goals. 3. Time Management (being intentional with your time): - Allocate specific time blocks each day to work on your goals. - Avoid distractions and stay committed to your schedule. Regular Check-Ins 1. Schedule Regular Meetings: - Set up a recurring meeting with your supervisor to discuss your progress. - Determine the frequency (e.g., weekly, bi-weekly, or monthly). 2. Prepare for Meetings: - Create an agenda for each meeting highlighting your progress, challenges, and next steps. - Be ready to discuss specific achievements and areas where you need support.
