Coffee Hours Today at 1pm MST - Let's Beat Last Week's Turnout
Coffee Hours is in a few hours: 1pm MST Grab your coffee (or whatever keeps you going) and show up. We'd really love to see you there. The floor is open. Your comments. Your stories. Your questions. Your jokes. Whatever you need to talk about. Last week's turnout was solid. Let's beat it this week. This is your space. Use it. The eBook is Almost Done I'm almost finished with my new eBook: "What to Do When the Job Market Fails You: A Survival Guide for Workers Over 40" Here's what's in it: How to survive when nobody will hire you. The practical steps I took after 800 applications and zero offers. Building alternative income streams. Freelancing. Medium. Communities. Coaching. Whatever works when traditional employment shuts you out. How to handle the mental health crash that comes with rejection. Because sending hundreds of applications into the void destroys you. I'll tell you how I stayed functional when everything felt hopeless. How to pivot when your plan falls apart. When Medium income drops 75% in one month. When freelance clients ghost you. When substitute teaching applications get rejected. What you do next. How to build income with no experience, no network, and no safety net. Because most of us don't have rich uncles or six months of savings. We're starting from nothing and figuring it out as we go. This isn't theory. This is what I actually did to survive when the system failed me. I'll be offering it on Gumroad. I'll send out the link when it's done. Leave a comment if you're interested and I'll make sure you get the link. Let's Get More Active in the Threads Conversations have been lagging a bit lately. Let's fix that. I'll be posting more topics throughout the week to get discussions going. Be ready to jump in. This community works when we show up for each other. Share your wins. Share your struggles. Ask questions. Answer questions. Tell stories. Make jokes. We're all in this together. See you at Coffee Hours. 1pm MST. Be there.

My goal: To be so great they can't ignore me
I am going to be 66 soon. I am "between gigs." Its been six months. Things are tough out there - not as tough as the dot-bomb era or the 2008 finance crash or the Covid epidemic, but it's tough. How am I dealing with it? I am working my @$$ off. I am learning new skills (AI, etc.), writing about those skills via LinkedIn, Medium, Substack, and more. I've written a series of AI-related books, the first of which will post on Kindle any day now. My goal is to say, Fuck you. I am so great you cannot ignore me. (That's a bit of a paraphrase of Steve Martin, but its my magnificent obsession.) Read more here - https://medium.com/@tdoherty_96508/be-so-good-they-cant-ignore-you-2b4a354f5980 To me my main reason for joining this group is to help others and to, ultimately, lobby against the massive, blatant age discrimination out there. All my best, Tom

Great article! I often talk about passion and I like your take on it. I wrote something about passion some time back that I thought you might enjoy: https://medium.com/@jasonjamesweiland/i-dont-write-because-i-love-it-i-write-because-there-s-nothing-else-left-2659b8c0f9af
Question re: purpose - as a human being?
Dear Group: Moderator Jason was kind enough to take my question regarding the focus of this group seriously, so, so encouraged, I am going to pose another question: what would you say is your purpose as a human being? I know this may be a stretch, but I honestly think that this question does impact our careers and job searches, etc. I sometimes wonder whether I would have achieved more financial success if making a lot of money had been my first priority in the first place. But, at the risk of humble bragging, it hasn't been. Please do not get me wrong; I do not dislike money. I depend on it. I feel that I depend on money the way a diabetic depends on the injection needle. But, I do not feel that my passion has been for making a lot of money. My passion has been for helping people. And, I think that that passion has influenced my career moves. I want to be the first to say that that is probably an irrational way to feel. I suspect that the rational approach is that, in this world, if you want to help people - you can do a lot more to help them if you have money. But I am not sure whether my heart, my emotional center, has ever really processed that rationale. But, what do you think? What do you say that your purpose is - and how does that influence what you want out of a career? Thank you very much for your time and attention. Respectfully, John

I know my purpose here on earth is to help people. When I almost died in 2022 from a heart attack, I realized I must still be here for a reason. SO that is what I do. But like you guys said, I also have a new purpose, to be financially successful. IN tandem with my goal of helping people. I am helping myself and my family. Those purposed do not clash, but support each other.
Medium
Enjoyed the video @Jason Weiland I look at Medium and the posts as a personal time/ asset. I repost lots what I share to my Network— mostly Korea business, but at times just my creative writings, too— more for therapy/ outlet.

New YouTube Video: "Medium, I Love You, But What the Hell Happened to My Stats?"
I just posted a new video breaking down what's been happening with Medium lately—and why my stats dropped off a cliff in January after three killer months. In the video, I walk through: - Why my December earnings were $4,500 and January was barely $1,000 - What actually changed with Medium's algorithm and distribution - Why this rollercoaster is normal (and why you can't put all your eggs in the Medium basket) - What I'm doing to stay consistent even when the platform goes sideways - How to build multiple income streams so one bad month doesn't break you This is real talk about the ups and downs of building income on Medium. No sugarcoating. No pretending it's all smooth sailing. Just the truth about what it's actually like trying to make a living as a writer on someone else's platform. 👉 https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RoLdi20b6EE If you find it helpful, please hit the like button and subscribe to the channel. I'm building out more content about freelancing, Medium, age discrimination, and building income on your own terms. Your support helps me keep making this stuff. Speaking of Medium— If you're trying to build real income on the platform and tired of making pennies, I just launched Medium Mastery. This is everything I learned going from $300/month to $4,500/month in 90 days—the good months AND the reality of when things drop. No guru bullshit. Just the system that works, taught by someone who wasted seven years figuring it out. First 300 members: $5/month locked in foreverAfter that: $14.99/month 11 modules. Weekly live coaching. Real community of writers doing the work. 👉 https://www.skool.com/medium-mastery-1766/about Thanks for being part of this community. Let's keep building. —Jason

@Kate G Thank you this makes complete sense and I wonder if Medium is doing something similar. We all need to keep going, be stubborn, and it will pay off!
