Day 22 & 23 - Lyon and side step.
Hot hot hot the last 2 days and no way to escape it. Yesterday was a write off but today has been cooler so we got to play outside in the shade. @Fiona Austin here's where we are at with side step. We've done about 5 sessions over 4 days. I'm cautious about doing too many sessions but perhaps I'm being over cautious, what do you think? I'm just randomly dispensing the food, is the aim for him to follow my hand rather than learn the steps independently?

@Sally Argo ok for a 6 month old I would be happy for him to be doing stairs sensibly, I would recommend on lead so he can't do anything stupid. Most young dog injuries/growth plates issues are from twisting and turning and blunt force trauma. He has really good muscle tone for a pup which will help protect him. Don't let him throw himself up and down the stairs. Basic exercises like sit to stand and down to stands would be good for him as well as the side stepping. In fact teaching a spaniel to stand still in a nice square "stack" is an awesome skill.
Day 36- photoshoot, conditioning challenge, Rally and scentwork
AM was beach photoshoot and this is what I got! Send help honestly 🤣 Lunch time- worked on @Fiona Austin side steps. Frank has done them before but not for a while and it’s such a great warm up exercise. Oreo’s first go. He’s ok with touch and pressure so I was quite comfortable to just guide him. We then worked on some Rally O signs. I’ve been looking for a sport both oldie and youngster can do and I think it’s a fun option. I might add it to my Sunday group class to work on together. PM- scentwork search for Frank and some indications for Oreo and lots of play 😊 Seems like a huge day but it’s all really 5min kettle training sessions. Also please excuse the state of my yard. Clearly dog training is priority over tidying up around here 🤣

@Ave Paasuke it could just be growing pains.... A luxating patella can be helped by strong muscles to help keep it in position 💪 A good omega 3 & 6 supplement might be useful as well. I used Antinol here in the UK, but no idea if you can get it.

@Ave Paasuke if you need further help, just reach out to me 🥰 Yes I think I should be taking Antinol as well 🤣
Day 39 - side steps and Rally
Worked some more side steps. Such a happy little tails haha. Added forward and back movement for Frank. I used to do the box move heaps as a warm up for hoopers. Lunch time we trained some Rally signs. I am also not a big fan of AI but Jo Rosie shared her training planner prompts in her group so I just had to make one! It’s beautiful and so useful to keep us on track! 🤩 First video has a bark warning! Frank having fomo this time 🙈

Little Oreo's side steps are really coming on, he really responds well to you changing your body position to help him. He just needs to build up more rear end awareness, but that's just a puppy thing to learn. He is awesome 🥰 I love Frank's box step, we use backward walking as well so a very nice way to combine them. Great work with both of them 🥰
Next Challenge! 🥳
Thank you so much @Fiona Austin for running the challenge this week. We thoroughly enjoyed it and will continue to work on it. Our next challenge starts 13th July and is all about scentwork indications; hover, sit, down or retrieve. You will find step by step instructions in our Premium Classroom or work at your own goals ☺️

No problem at all, it's great to introduce people to the world of canine conditioning 🥰
Canine conditioning challenge
Hi all, it's still Sunday here in the UK , but I think some of you are waking up already to Monday and I want you to be able to start the challenge as soon as you want to dive in.... I'm a certified canine conditioning coach here in the UK, I've qualified from The Canine Conditioning Academy which is a level 4 diploma. We are looking at one of the exercises from my foundation course which is our side steps. It's a great exercise and all you need is some treats and a dog. It works the adductors and abductor in both the hind and fire legs, the glutes, the side abdominals and the iliopsoas, so for such a simple exercise it is quite the work out. If this is new to your dog, reward anything that looks like a sideways movement and build on that. We don't want to push our dogs, but moving towards them into their space can encourage the sideways movement we are after. If you can side steps already, you can take it out and about with you, uneven surfaces, going up and down a slope. I have other options if you find this easy ☺️ Show me what you can do and I'll give you feedback.

@Anaelle Billaud really interesting, yes try between your legs. Can DagDag walk forward between your legs? If so definitely give it a go. Other things you could try.... Lower value treats (sounds weird but might not obsessed about them so much). Do you have any platforms? If not a couple of dog mats and put them about a side step apart and move between the two. Put a video up so I can see what's happening 😊
