What Would You Do When the Organisation Says No?
Gโ€™day everyone! Yes, itโ€™s been awhile since Iโ€™ve posted. Itโ€™s great to be back. Iโ€™m out in Junee this week doing some WHS training with a team of grateful, down to earth people. Itโ€™s a beautiful little town. Some of the safety concepts that weโ€™ve brought up have met some stone walls and Iโ€™d love your advice on how to knock some of those walls down. What do you do when an organisation is overlooking some sections of the law and disregarding that peopleโ€™s health as a result? This question relates to testing the hearing of your team that works in high noise zones. In order to help the team out, how would you attack it from a leadership point of view to give these teams the skills to go to their managers to query why a noise program doesnโ€™t exist?

Nice to see you again! Good video, great question. I would love to know more about the reasons why they feel they cannot approach the subject with their managers. There has to be something they have seen or heard or are afraid of behind all that. Do you know the reason/a?

@David East hmmm I wonder why...
What Surprised You Today?
When it comes to safety, we generally know what needs to be done so that we donโ€™t get hurt or break something. Unfortunately, accidents generally surprise us. We are not aware that we have created the conditions for something serious to happen. So what happened in your world today? Thatโ€™s a pretty general question so let me make it more specific. Did you have any 4Ds happen? Dumb, Different. Dangerous, Difficult When I ask these questions in the workplace, the answer I get is normally blank stares. So I expand on them. Was there something that didnโ€™t make sense? โ€“ dumb? Was there something that was different to the way you normally do it? Was there something that presented a new hazard that you werenโ€™t tracking - dangerous? Was there something that was more difficult than it shouldโ€™ve been? These questions always generate much better conversation. So whatโ€™s your 4D for today?

I had a dumb happen late yesterday evening when my Son texted me to say he did his ankle again playing volleyball. ๐Ÿ†˜ A recurring injury. Same ankle, third time. ๐Ÿ˜’

@David East He's got crutches, but it seems to be healing pretty quick to be honest!
Powerful You
How are you feeling today? Was it a normal boring day, or did you get after something awesome? For me it started out as a normal boring day. I got to work, I made the mistake of checking emails, and I went down a rabbit hole. I didnโ€™t want to go down. It wasnโ€™t until 10 am that I decided. Iโ€™ve gotta get out of here and do something better So I went for a 6k hike. - ๏ปฟ๏ปฟYou believe in your own potential: You are powerful when you understand that you are capable of achieving anything you set your mind to. - ๏ปฟ๏ปฟContinuous Learning: You are powerful because you never stop learning and are constantly seeking to improve yourself and your skills. - ๏ปฟ๏ปฟAbundant Gratitude: You practice abundant gratitude, recognising and appreciating the abundance in your life.. - ๏ปฟ๏ปฟRelentless Drive: You have a relentless drive, never giving up until you achieve your desired outcome. - Bold Vision: You have a bold vision, setting your sights on big goals and pursuing them with passion and purpose. - Radical Self-Care: You practice radical self-care, prioritising your physical, emotional, and mental health to fuel limitless potential. - ๏ปฟ๏ปฟExtreme Ownership: You take extreme ownership of your life, taking responsibility for your actions and outcomes. I love this post, I made a decision about 2 years ago to get my hair done regularly. It might sound a bit futile, but I was not in the habit. Maybe once or twice a year I would go to the hairdressers. It was actually starting to really bother me that I wasn't spending time on myself for this. Now I go more regularly, and I feel better for it. ๐Ÿ˜Š My hair doesn't grow back the wrong colour for very long anymore. ๐Ÿคฃ

Planet Earth. You Are A Crew!
I love this. NASA Artemis Astronaut, Mission Specialist Christina Koch, talking about what makes a crew. When she was originally asked the question several years ago, she mentioned it's about being on a mission, eating and working together. Now that she's back from 10 days in space with 3 other crew members, she has revised what a crew means to her. - The crew is in it, all the time, no matter what - They are stroking together, all the time, with the same purpose - They are willing to sacrifice silently for each other - That gives grace - That holds accountable - A crew has the same cares and the same needs - A crew is inescapably, beautifully, dutifully linked She then goes on to highlight looking at Earth ๐ŸŒ from a great distance, and while it looked beautiful, the most amazing part was the amount of empty blackness that surrounded it. We're just a lifeboat hanging un-disturbingly in the universe. Planet Earth. You are a crew. Considering the name of this community, it's clear that being part of a crew is important to me. Doesn't have to be in a plane, or a boat, or a spaceship. It's a group of people with a mission to accomplish, and that mission can be anything. It can be flying a plane, conducting major surgery, running a busy ER, teaching a class, building a house or even building a Skool community. In our Skool communities, we live it. Working together, all in, sacrificing silently, bound by the same cares, the same needs, the same mission. Letโ€™s hold each other accountable, give each other grace, and fly - beautifully, dutifully, inescapably linked.

Systems and People
HOP principle no.3 Systems Drive Behaviour! What is a system that works so well that you canโ€™t get enough of it? Your car, your kitchen, your grocery store? Concurrently, what is the system that you just get so frustrated by? Getting your car serviced, a messy kitchen or finding a car park when you go shopping? The airport system is a complex one. They can be stressful, busy and rude. My trip through Sydney Airport was none of the above. It was actually brilliant. Following recent upgrades itโ€™s actually quite delightful to get through despite the massive crowds of anxious travellers. The whole process left me feeling very comfortable and quite happy. Systems drive behaviour. It comes at a cost, but that cost speaks volumes for how people will behave within that system. The way we treat people is also part of a system that drives behaviour. Iโ€™ve been in Brisbane for the past couple of days and it has definitely been a people oriented trip. Critical meetings, and farewelling a gentleman that has been in the Air Force for 45 years of dedicated service. Showing your presence, kindness, and empathy around these situations speaks volumes for how the system operates. His farewell speech included a homage to how important it is to treat every person in your organisation like they matter, because if you do they stay and will always reward you with good work. If you donโ€™t want to invest the time or money to improve it, behaviour within your people will show that they donโ€™t like it and they will walk away. This is why investing in your people and your systems is so important. Never ever stop looking after the system that looks after your people. Take a look at your systems this week. Are they building people up or wearing them down?

@David East It's amazing! I loved it! I was so interested to see if they were going to walk, I don't know why I was interested in that, so when they all walked from the helicopter to the medical bay, I was impressed. ๐Ÿคฃ
