Authority doesn't precede authorship. It grows from it. Language has been trying to tell us something about this for a very long time. The Latin root of authority is auctor: master, leader, author. We have spent so long treating these qualities as something that must be earned from outside sources—through performance, the right credentials, or external validation—that we have forgotten language itself points in the opposite direction. Take the word courage. It comes from the Latin cor, which means heart. To be courageous is, at its root, to act from the heart. And confidence: its Latin root means to trust fully, to have complete faith in oneself. Authority is authorship. It is the act of putting your name on something that came from you. Courage is not the absence of fear. It is the willingness to speak from the heart even when fear is present. Confidence is not certainty about the outcome—it is the practice of trusting in your own knowing, your lived experience, and your unique way of seeing the world. None of these are destinations you arrive at. They are states of being. One way we hone these attributes is through the practice of writing one true sentence at a time, as Ernest Hemingway taught us. And the place where all three of them intersect, where authorship, courage, and self-trust come together, is writing your unique message.
