Beef Tallow
I was shopping at Costco and came across this Beef Tallow. I know it's the in thing right now and like everything else a craz and eventually phases out. It was a great price 2 jars for $10.00. It's currently on sale right now. Normally, it's $17.99, what a bargain. I grabbed it real quickly as wanted to learn how to utilize it and to it's full potential. I know it's an oil and to deep fry it will require a ton. Please share your pros and cons. Taste and flavor and any benefits to it as well. I would love to incorporate it into my bread, cake and cookie baking. Does it have a beefy smell or flavor to it. I am always curious as usual. Please share your outcome with your bakes. Updated Whipped Tallow Cream. Excellent moisturizer for one's face and body. Outstanding for the dry winter season. @Henry Hunter @Timothy McQuaid

Wow, quite a good price. Beef tallow is so versatile, both from nutrition and cooking point of view. ItÂŽs 100% fat but its nutritional profile is quite interesting because it contains quite a lot of monosaturated fats (like the olive oil). And for baking is a gold mine because of its melting point. It can render some textures that are from another world in pastries. Just take into consideration that if you have a recipe with 100 grams of butter, you have to use 80g of beef tallow (as it is 100% fat while butter is around 80%).

I was going to join the bake a long today but...
Last night around 9:30 the pot rack jumped off the wall - like all the cast iron pots came crashing down around my glass top stove and knocked a ceramic jar that holds my cooking utensils to the ground - the racket sounded horrendous! Ran downstairs to make sure no one was injured in the crash and though we are spending today revamping the attachment strategy nothing broke! It did however make the kitchen un useable for the day... I'll be baking my baguettes later in the week I suppose

🍞 Recipes
🍞 Easter is this weekend and I've got something for you.
Hot cross buns have a 700-year history, a science lesson built into every batch, and two versions worth making: yeasted if you want same-day results, sourdough if you want the overnight project. I just published the full breakdown on the blog. The history alone is worth the read. https://bakinggreatbread.blog/2026/03/28/hot-cross-buns-recipe-history/ Both recipes are on the Recipe Pantry. Bring your bake to the community this weekend. We want to see your crosses. đŸ”„ — Henry âđŸ”„

Welcome to Crust & Crumb Academy — Let's Get You Started đŸžđŸ”„
If you just joined, this post is for you. You made a good call. This isn't a place where people scroll past pretty loaf photos and feel bad about their own baking. It's a place where people actually get better. That's the whole point. Here's how to get the most out of the Academy right away: Start in the Classroom. Head to the Classroom tab and look for Baker's Fundamentals if you're newer to bread, or Sourdough Starter 101 if sourdough is why you're here. Both are free, both are thorough, and both will save you from the mistakes that trip up most home bakers. Check the Recipe Pantry. Every recipe on the feed references something in the Pantry. It's at pantry.bakinggreatbread.com — interactive recipes with timers, scaling, and step-by-step guidance built in. Bookmark it now. Show up on Saturday. We run a Bake-Along every Saturday. Doesn't matter what level you're at. Show up, bake alongside the group, post your results. That's where most of the real learning happens. Introduce yourself below. Tell us your name, where you're baking from, and one thing you want to get better at. That's it. No wrong answers. The rest of you — you know who you are — drop a reply and make these new folks feel at home. This community runs the way it does because of how you show up for each other. Perfection is not required. Progress is.
