Environmental Literacy (Reading the Room)
Literacy doesn't end at the edge of a page. Environmental Literacy is the ability to walk into a space and understand its "story." Who lives here? What do they value? What is the "vibe" of this environment? When we teach kids to "read the room," we are building their situational awareness and empathy. We are helping them move from the "lead vest" of being self-conscious (worrying about how they look) to being conscious of others (observing how others feel). This shift is the ultimate social safety net. Here’s the plot twist, with more people immersed in screens, how do you learn to read that room? Require cameras to be always on? Create a new way of deciphering meaning from short bursts of text? This one truly stumps me and I’m curious how you read the digital room?

@Mary Nunaley I think so too! That's an interesting question because I am not so sure about having mastered digital communiciaton. When is this the case? I still have a lot to learn! But to answer the question from my current knowledge and experience with digital communication; I would start asking questions like: - How do you communicate effectively offline - What do you like about that, and what is challenging? And to see that as a starting point because online communication requires (at least) the same set of skills and awareness you need offline.

@Mary Nunaley Exactly, we should keep asking this, because even if we think we know the answer for ourself, it might be something for different for someone else, that's something to keep in mind at all times! Mmm yes that's a good one, I would say focusing mainly on text because that's the real message (especially if it's written in an understable way = the way we would speak... not polished, imperfectly perfect), and everything else is supportive but should not be confused with the main or core points of our "message".
