The Accident Changed More Than My Life
The traumatic brain injury changed my life. 😵‍💫 There was so much unknown. I felt like I had to figure out how to put myself back together and decide what kind of life I wanted after everything had changed. It was hard. 😬 And somehow, I can also look back and see gifts inside that experience. ❤️ One of them is this: I know what it feels like to keep moving when you don’t have the entire path figured out. That matters in the way I work with writers. ✍️ Because sometimes a writer thinks she needs to see the whole book before she can move. Every chapter. Every transition. Every publishing decision. Every answer. I don’t believe you need all of that before you begin. Sometimes you need to know: What are you trying to say? What’s the next part of the story? What can you write today? Then we learn from what appears on the page. 📄 Then we adjust. That’s part of why I’m so protective of discovery in writing. ✍️ You’re allowed to find things as you go. You’re allowed to change your mind. You’re allowed to realize the story is becoming something different than you first imagined. Not knowing everything yet doesn’t mean you’re lost. Sometimes it simply means: You’re still discovering the path.

@Dani Rosenblad James Very wise words and clarity. Even I can see through your lenses. Oddly we sometimes think we know it all and have it all figured out. But there are many crossed roads in our lives. Some more abrupt than others. I especially feel that about people. When I encounter someone for whatever stent of time. I sometimes can find value and reverence to keep moving on with some. Or to be limited based on where my life or mind is operating. If it’s meant for us to pass again. It will be… ☺️
Let's Find the Story Beneath Your Story
I want to try something with you today. Think about one experience from your life that you tell people often. Now ask yourself: Why do I keep telling this story? Maybe it makes you laugh. 😂 Maybe you're proud of who you became. 😊 Maybe it reminds you of someone. 😍 Maybe it completely changed the way you see life. ❤️ Now go one step deeper. What did that experience change inside you? 💥 That's where things get interesting. 😁 Sometimes the story isn't simply what happened. It's who we became because it happened. Give yourself ten minutes today and write about it. ✍️ Don't make it perfect. Explore it. You might discover something you didn't expect. ❤️ If you do this exercise, come back and tell us what you discovered! Let's support one another by commenting and sharing our thoughts.

I think this is an interesting question. But it’s not something I do. But I did know an acquaintance a few years ago that would do exactly that. I must have heard her story of a few incidents she experienced repeatedly every time o met up with her and friends. We would be talking about various subjects. Then out of the blue, she would start her tales of things she’d been through. In the beginning I listened and even tried to give her some advice or encouragement. But after so many attempts to het her to move on from it. I believe we all gave up. So she would ramble about the same things and we would be quiet and let her have the floor. Many times some of us would walk away or distance ourselves. Even focus on projects or other things not to be rude to her. Your question did give me a moment to see a behavior that some people possess when I think about creating a character. This will go into my notes for later use hopefully. It also shows how some of us have flaws or issues with our lives that we can’t always resolve. Like being stuck at some point. Interesting question. 🧐

@Dani Rosenblad James not to sound redundant, but did that, done that. Multiple times and from different people in groups, but it’s something that she’s stuck on and we decided to just let her be with it.
Why I Teach Story First
The reason I'm sharing this story is because @Justin Yip helped me understand the importance of sharing this through Authority Artifacts. Thanks Justin! ❤️ When I worked on my first book, part of me thought I was crazy. Writing a book felt huge. 👀 Still, the story kept calling me to write it, so eventually I did. I hired an editor for around $2,500 and remember sitting in front of my computer looking through what she sent back. My heart dropped. 💔 There were all these things she saw as wrong. My heart clenched, I felt myself closing off, and it was hard to breathe. 💨 At first, I thought maybe I just had a problem taking constructive feedback. She was the editor. She knew more than I did. So I gulped down my fears and decided she knew best. I made many of the changes she suggested. There were some things I couldn't bring myself to change because they felt too wrong. And I'm glad I kept them. ❤️ But with some of the other changes, I felt gross. 😷 Unauthentic. It didn't feel completely like my story anymore. And I learned another lesson the expensive way. 💰 This was a picture book, and I'd had the illustrations created before the editing process. Once the story changed, some of the pictures had to be created again. Then I ran into problems formatting the book. 📕 I kept trying, hiring help where I could, and ultimately spent around $5,000 on the book without making that money back. 💵 I'm still thankful I wrote it. 😊 That experience taught me lessons I carry into the way I guide writers today. Looking back, I would ask that version of myself something different before worrying about illustrations, formatting, publishing, or promotion: What do you want this story to do for you? How do you want the reader to feel? When a child hears this story, what do you want them to leave with? That's part of why I teach Story First™. A framework can give you direction. An editor can point out something you haven't seen. A team can help you through parts of the process you don't have to carry alone.

@Dani Rosenblad James Wow! You know this spoke to me. So I had to comment. Sorry you know I am long winded. 🤦🏽‍♀️. I believe from the beginning when I first started this journey of writing. My first manuscript the time I started writing even up into this day. I haven’t a clue to why this story. I’ve stopped trying to figure it out. I felt it in my gut… about my first story. I can only say that I think I wrote my story first blindly and I could honestly say I didn’t know a thing about what I was doing. Here years and two months. I’ve had an editor look at a portion of it. A third of the manuscript. Amount I paid for that viewing was an investment as far as I was concerned. It was to see if I was on the right track with my story. But the review that I was given, didn’t sit with me well. Because it wasn’t basically about a real person’s life, and what happened to them; it was about my character development, not my writing. How my storyline should be based differently and how strong of a skill I have around those characters. But then told me to changed them and my plot. And the interpretation that they received after reviewing a portion of my manuscript, the feedback. Threw me off. Bells started to ring. Or should I say alarms. At the present, I am in revision and review with this same said manuscript. And although I appreciate the feedback. I got from this editor which I value some of the context that was given to me from the feedback. I can’t change my story. One of the things that you, Dani, constantly ask is why are you writing the story? Who are you writing the story for? It has been a question that I have not found the answer for. But I still want to tell this story. It is me telling a story of two people‘s lives and the other lives that surround them and the experiences they had of course, it’s just fiction. It’s my story. With all this being said, I have not been in the mindset to worry about getting it published immediately or in the future. It will it be one day. Who will do it, will I get published? That’s a question. Unanswered.

Can I Coach You for a Minute?
If we were sitting together right now and you told me, "I don't know where to start." I probably wouldn't begin by talking about chapters. I'd ask you this: "What experience changed the way you see the world?" 🌍 Because books rarely begin with an outline. They begin with meaning. Start there. Everything else becomes much easier to build around. I'd love to know, what experience comes to mind for you? Share it in the comments! 🤩

@Dani Rosenblad James Not exactly… If my dreams have personal significance, or relative significance to family members, my mom, god rest her spirit. I tend to have them around birthdays, or some event that ties my train of thoughts back to them. But it’s rare that those happen. And I use to think that at certain times in a year. A lot of things collide with me personally. Like late winter and early spring. It can vary( Jan-March or Feb-April) Truthfully, I’ve never written about any of it. Life shows up, you know, things are just off. Many times in my younger years, it was just crazy. But I dreaded that time period. For years setting myself for the unknown chaos. With not a clue to why things just happened, felt off But I’ve always had random dreams. Never could relate to anything. Things, dreams, that I’ve dreamt over and over; especially where I was young. These beyond the I can fly, and falling only to wake up, stuff. But now it’s different and with my writing. It’s interesting. I’m not the writer have writers block because I can’t create a storyline. I’m not saying that I don’t have points of struggle. What is going to happen, where are they, what is their name? How is the location, or time of day? Various embellishments that writers include, so readers see what’s happening ( you know, show not tell) I have those problems. But I can’t relate to the ‘Why this story? Why now? Something about that hasn’t connected for me. I’ve never heard voices 😱tell me to write either 😜 Does that make it a gift or a curse? 😊

@Dani Rosenblad James Wow, very intuitive to see from another’s perspective and reflect back to take a look at what my life was in a different light. There is a lot there. Way too much to express here, but still as I start to think about it. I am still at that place of not connecting what I referenced in my previous post. That chaos, my dreams and what I get from them and why I right a story of a particular genre. What I have found since I started writing is I really enjoyed writing and the mental stimulation it gives. I have always been over analytical. I like problem solving, not necessarily a mystery. But how things work. I’m sure at some point I’ll put pieces of a puzzle together and maybe write memoir 😂. Yes, but I love the stimulation your inquiry generates. 🥰
