Greg and I are ready and loved watching the intro video last night! Happy birthday Carl!!! 🥰🎂
Wednesday, Quarta, 2nd July, 2025: Let's start learning (more) Portuguese on my birthday!
"Olá bom dia ALEGRIA! Tudo bem?" How old are you? Yes, I did just ask you how old you are; "Quantos anos tem?", em Português. The reason for my impertinence is that I'll be 60 on Monday, 7th July, which as birthdays can do, has prompted questions, reflections and considerations about what has been, what comes next, and what to do with my community of fellow life travellers, here in Portugal. For me, this chronological 'marker', which on one level is just another day, yet is also a profound milestone, has me asking HOW I want to be as I go into what can be seen as the second half, last third, or in reality - who knows how long? What I do know, is that I feel hard-wired to serve, support and share the enjoyment of life in Portugal with others, who are in their own way making a fulfilling new life here, loving this country's culture and making a positive impact as we go. This I will continue to do. And in doing so make this community a more obvious and focused place for that flavour and quality, with others who are moved and inspired to do the same. Practically, my big birthday is prompting some particular themes, namely: more purposefully learning the Portuguese language, investing in my health, wellbeing and fitness, as well as continuing to live my life in Portugal with an emphasis on *fun, friendship and fulfilment*. If this appeals to and resonates with you, you are in the right place! And please share this message and mission with others who might like to join us. You can share this link with them, and get a nice little bit of monthly income too 😉 Recently, I have had the good fortune to now be able to share @Maria Malheiro's '30-DAY EUROPEAN PORTUGUESE CHALLENGE - BEGINNERS' right here on this Portugal Club platform, and invite you to celebrate my birthday by starting the course with me from next Monday, 7th. Let's do it, "vamos embora!!!"

When I look at the technical definition, expat seems to be more transient or temporary (moving country to country) whereas immigrant is more permanent (I’m here forever now)

Portugal Amends Nationality Law
The 5-Year Naturalization Period Starts From Application (Rather Than Approval) Date… This past Friday, Portugal’s parliament approved changes to the country’s nationality law that will allow residents to start counting their five years to citizenship from the day they applied for residency, rather than from the date they received approval. This could mean saving several years off the time to citizenship. Under the previous legislation, foreign residents of Portugal were eligible to apply for Portuguese citizenship five years after the approval of their residence permit in the country. Due to severe administrative delays with the country’s immigration authorities, however, the time between a residence permit application and its approval can extend to two or more years. As a consequence, the time it takes, for example, a golden visa investor to reach the naturalization eligibility stage can, in practice, take 7-8 years from the date on which they filed their initial application. These administrative delays have affected a wide range of residency types, not merely those based on investments. This state of affairs gave rise to a situation in which individuals applying for residency saw their path to citizenship lengthened by several years compared to what’s foreseen in the law, not through any fault of their own but because of the state’s inability to process applications in a timely manner. In the case of golden visa investors, for example, while the legislation supposes a processing time of no more than three months, the actual processing time now exceeds two years. To address this injustice, the amended law’s Article 15 now contains a new rule, which reads as follows: “For the purposes of counting the legal residence periods provided for in this law, the time elapsed since the moment the temporary residence title was requested is also considered if it is approved.” This new rule recognizes the damage that the delay in the analysis by public services causes to applicants and aims to overcome this failure through an administrative and automatic measure.
