Repairing an old MCU Pro
Just bought an old MCU Pro controller for a very good price. I need to replace the LCD displays bc they go old and stop shining. (Got the replacements all ready) And it also makes a funky humming noise, i think is because the LCD needs high voltage to work but since they don't shine anymore, they are overloading the component that supply the high voltage. (Not the main power supply) Ive just disassembled some parts of it and it has a lot of different screw types had to put them on different containers so i dont get them mixed up. A fun restoration project of a great piece of gear. Ill aim to make it work good as new so i can implement it to my mixing workflow The jog wheel its a bit bent too, ill see what i can do about that.

Only so much I can do…
So I’m working on track for a client and he keeps on coming back at me with mix notes that are more about feeling versus technicalities.. How do you guys deal with these types of mix notes? I feel like where he wants me to take the song is not where it can go. Like he’s trying to make the song something it’s not..and based on the production plus vocal performance wise it can’t go there.. I’m pullin’ out my hair!!

Can you clarify or give examples of what you mean by trying to make the song something it’s not?

@Hallé Barrantes To help save time on revisions for a client like that I found it easier to setup a virtual call where I share an audio movers link. Then we can work through the revisions in real time to get their okay on each move that’s made. Most times it’s easier to communicate over a call than over written notes and you can also educate and show them why what they are requesting won’t work or how it effects the rest of the mix.

@Hallé Barrantes Haha nice. I personally don’t like TP. It sounds weird to me and I feel like it ruins the transients. I don’t intentionally over shoot 0dbfs but sometimes it just does it on its own, or on the conversion in streaming.

@Hallé Barrantes Let me know what you think. If it sounds good it’s how it is suppose to sound 🤷🏽‍♂️
Mix Lab on Monday
Fam! Lets kick off our first community Mix Lab on Monday February 9th. How does 3pm MST sound? In the Mix Lab, the song is the Constant. The Engineer is the Variable. When we strip away the "competition" (who is loudest, etc.), we are left with pure interpretation. The why did you do what you did, opens us up to a conversation, where we are learning from each other and discussing elements that we may have missed and interpreted differently than others. The Mix Lab is about proving there are multiple right answers. Come to this lab not to see who has the best mix, but to see how many different ways this song can exist. You will leave not with a trophy, but with a new technique for your own toolkit.

I am going to try. How long will it be? And are you trying to have the sessions up or are we just talking about the mixes?

@Hallé Barrantes Okay cool. I probably won’t have my setup that’s why I asked, but yeah, I put it in my calendar and will try to make it.
NLS Channel?
Touching on what @Pedro Arechiga was talking about, mixing from the top down, I usually start with some NLS.. just one.. and I usually find that Mike works best.. Then when I bypass and activate, the difference is night and day!! I know @Dom Mendoza does something similar.

Lately I’ve been trying to move fully ITB, as I do have an analog summer, but I’ve yet to find something that I like on my subgroups to replace what summing does for me. I’ve tried the Slate VCC, and the SSL4000E from PA, and a number of other ones, but idk it is hard to get the same feel and I miss my summer hahaha
