I have read books that were technically flawed but stayed with me for years because I cared so much about the people in them. I have also read books that were beautifully written and perfectly structured, but I never felt emotionally connected to anyone.
For me, I think emotional connection wins every time.
I want to care about the people. I want to feel like I know them. I want to understand what they are afraid of, what they regret, what they are hiding, what they hope for, and what they are trying to survive.
I think that is probably why I am so drawn to stories about second chances, redemption, small towns, secrets, family struggles, addiction recovery, faith, and people rebuilding their lives.
A technically perfect story can impress me, but an emotionally real story stays with me.
What about everyone else? What makes a story unforgettable to you?
