Potential does not become readiness without reps
Yesterday, we talked about developing people before the vacancy exists.
Not waiting until someone leaves.
Not waiting until the promotion posts.
Not waiting until the organization suddenly realizes it has nobody ready.
Today, let’s talk about the part that often gets missed:
Potential is not the same as readiness.
Someone can have potential.
They can be smart.
Reliable.
Motivated.
Respected.
Good at their current job.
Interested in more responsibility.
That is valuable.
But potential only becomes readiness through reps.
Real ones.
Let them lead the meeting.
Let them brief the project.
Let them coordinate the handoff.
Let them train the new employee.
Let them own part of the process.
Let them solve the problem before the manager steps in.
Let them make a decision with some consequence attached to it.
Then coach them.
Review what happened.
What worked?
Where did they hesitate?
What did they miss?
What judgment needs development?
What skill needs another rep?
That is development.
Not just another online course.
Not just telling someone:
“You have leadership potential.”
Give them a controlled opportunity to prove it, learn from it, and try again.
And this applies to individuals too.
If you want the next role, start looking for reps before you have the title.
Do not pretend to have authority you do not have.
But look for opportunities to practice the capabilities the next level requires.
Lead something.
Build something.
Solve something.
Teach something.
Improve something.
Own something.
Then capture the evidence.
Because when the opportunity finally opens, the strongest answer is not:
“I think I could do it.”
It is:
“I have already been practicing the work.”
That changes the conversation.
So today’s question:
What is one real-world rep that would help you—or someone on your team—become more ready for the next level?
A project?
A presentation?
A stretch assignment?
Training someone?
Leading a meeting?
Owning a process?
Making a decision?
Drop it below.
Potential identifies who might be ready someday.
Reps are how we find out.
