Ghostly Visit
A short story
A Ghostly Visit
It was a cold night outside. The only thing moving was the wind. The wind had been screeching and howling all day. It seemed to be there for the night.
I laid on the couch reading a book. My loving loyal dog laying beside me. He acted a bit nervous but I thought it was the weather. He was on high alert. He heard something and growled. I thought little of it. I thought it was probably patio furniture, being moved by these strong winds.
I was getting ready for bed and I noticed the bracelet my husband bought me was out of place. I thought I must have gotten it out to wear and then changed my mind. So I put it back in its proper place.
I laid down, got comfy in my bed. All the lights in the house off except one. I had left it on since my husband had been called away for a mission. I said it would not be turned off until he come home.
Except that night, for no apparent reason it went out. I thought the light bulb must need replacing. I got up and went and checked it. But when I got to the switch it was in the off position. I was a little scared by that incident. I couldn’t really explain the reason the light would go off.
I went back to bed trying to fall asleep. It was no easy task. I listened to music which always seemed to comfort me. I’m listening to a playlist my husband and I picked out together. Soon I dozed off. I reach over in my slumber and turn the music off.
The next morning I was awakened by the phone. It wasn’t ringing. It wasn’t a sound of a text coming through. It was our playlist. How was that even possible? Shaken a little, I tried to focus on my day ahead. I got dressed and went to work.
At work my manager could tell something was bothering me. She asked me if I was okay. I told her of the events happening the night before and the music when I woke up. She laughed, she casually said your imagination is running wild.
It was Valentine’s Day so of course, people at work were getting flowers. My heart was warmed by the thought of someone loving so much they took the time to buy you flowers.
My husband had been gone for about 18 months. I had no clue when he would be back. Oh, but I would certainly be glad. I missed the Valentine’s Day gifts and surprises. My favorite flower was the yellow rose. He always brought me a dozen with one red for love, one white for eternity. It was something different than the original red roses. I loved it because it was personal.
I would forget the roses and just be happy to have him home. I wanted his presence more than anything you could buy. His presence to me was a gift. The love that we share is so tender. I just missed my husband. I went on working and my day was coming to an end.
The flower delivery was there, another delivery. This one was mine and to my surprise it was what my husband had always bought me. My manager asked where Hank was. I told her I hadn’t heard from him in days. We started coming up with reasons for the flowers. Maybe he called someone to get them to deliver them to me. Maybe he was home and he would surprise me later.
So many thoughts were flashing in my mind, I couldn’t settle on any. I left the flowers at the office and rushed home. I had to see, is he home? The only one home was Eddie, my dog. He was happy to see me. I took him out and then fed him.
He loved to play. So, we played with toys for a while. Then I was ready to settle down for the night.
It was about 3 in the morning my phone rang. I picked it up and it showed Hank was calling. When I went to answer there was no one there. They weren’t allowed incoming calls. So I wasn’t able to call him back. I anxiously sat with the phone in my hand. It never did ring again.
The next morning I got up and went to work. When I left the house I locked the doors and turned my ring camera on. I did that for packages being delivered. I wasn’t quite ready for the image it captured today.
I was in a meeting and my phone starts going off. I have it on mute or this meeting would be getting taken over by my dinging photo session on my ring camera. I looked at the image but my attention called back to the meeting, I only got a quick glance. I thought I seen Hank.
The meeting ended and I told them I didn’t feel well and went home. I checked everything nothing had been tampered with. I looked at the footage again. But after reviewing I couldn’t really make out the image. These were some strange times. I think I was making myself crazy. That night nothing else happened. I was relieved. These last few days had really shaken me.
The next morning I got my coffee and was going to watch a training video. A loud knock came on my door. I answered, it was three service members. They informed me that Hank went missing three days ago. Three days ago when everything started happening. Was Hank trying to tell me himself? Had Hank come home? Was this a ghost that had been visiting me?
