Claude memory

Within projects, does Claude have a memory from chat to chat? I have started a chat within a project and have asked it to share with me what it knows about the project and it always initially responds it cant look from chat to chat, but then when i press it , it says oh youre right , i can, here is the informatino. This has happened several times. What is the rule about projects and memory? Can you only rely on the project instructions and have to update them every chat? Do you just tell it to remember something and it will and dont need to worry about the project instructions? I have asked claude these questions but I always get different answers. I would like to know what everyone else is doing and experiencing, thank you!
