the first big tip that will open you to the community is to find a yacht-club and simply reach out and see if they have weekly races. many yacht clubs would love an enthusiastic crew member to tend the lines and one day be in charge of trimming the sales. or even skippering! it's alot closer than you think!!
racing has the added benefit of showing you best practices and the communication needed to effectively and efficiently achieve a boats full potential.
(very few yacht clubs are snobby so don't be afraid to ask to join a crew. most sailors are retirees who love to teach about their passion)
