💧 Stop "Greasing" Your Dry Hair! (Here is the Truth About Oil)
Let’s have a real talk about the biggest lie we were told growing up. How many of us remember sitting between our momma's legs while she scooped a handful of thick blue grease and slathered it on our dry scalp and hair? We thought we were "moisturizing." Newsflash: We weren't. We were just coating dry hair in grease. 🛑 As a licensed cosmetologist of 24 years, I see this every day. You buy expensive oils, slather them on, and wonder why your hair still feels like a Brillo pad an hour later. Here is the breakdown of Water vs. Oil so you never make this mistake again. 🧽 The Sponge Analogy (Visualize This) Imagine a dry, crusty kitchen sponge. - If you pour Olive Oil on that dry sponge, what happens? It stays hard. It just becomes a greasy, hard sponge. - But, if you run that sponge under Water first, it swells up, gets soft, and becomes flexible. Your hair is the sponge. Water is the only true moisturizer along side moisturizing shampoos, conditioners and leave ins. Oil is just the seal. 🚫 The Mistake: Oil on Dry Hair Oil is hydrophobic—it repels water. If your hair is dry and thirsty, and you put oil on it, you are building a wall. You are sealing the dryness IN and keeping the moisture OUT. You are effectively suffocating your strands. ✅ The Solution: The L.L.O. Method To actually hydrate your hair, you must layer your products in the correct order. Think of it like getting dressed: You put your underwear on before your pants. Step 1: Liquid (The "Plug") 💧 This is Water or a water-based refresher spray. The first ingredient on the bottle MUST be Aqua/Water. This enters the cuticle and makes the hair pliable. Step 2: Leave-In (The "Anchor") ⚓️ A good creamy leave-in conditioner grabs that water and holds it in the strand so it doesn't evaporate immediately. Step 3: Oil (The "Seal") 🔒 Now you use the oil. The oil is the "lid" on the jar. It locks the water and leave-in conditioner inside the strand so it stays soft for days. 💡 Pro-Tip: Pick Your Oil Wisely
Protect your natural hair at all costs!
As a licensed cosmetologist for 24 years, here is the harsh truth about your leave-out. If you are hitting it with a flat iron every single morning to blend with your weave, you are frying your crown. Stop it. Use a wax stick and a hot comb once, and wrap it at night! 🚑 SOS! 5 Pro Tips to Bring Your Dry Hair Back from the Dead
Hey Slay Circle! 👋🏽 Let’s keep it real for a second. Is your hair feeling like straw? Is it snapping off when you comb it? I’ve been a licensed cosmetologist for 24 years, and the #1 complaint I hear is: "Shalatashia, my hair is SO DRY." Most of the time, it’s not your hair’s fault—it’s your routine. You might be doing things that you think are helping, but are actually making it worse. Here are 5 Pro Tips to restore that moisture and get your bounce back. (Save this post, you’re gonna need it!) 1. Water is the Plug, Oil is the Seal 💧 Stop trying to "moisturize" your dry hair with grease or heavy oils. Oil does not contain moisture; it seals it in. - The Fix: Your hair needs water (or a water-based leave-in) first. Think of your hair like a sponge. If you put oil on a dry sponge, it stays dry. If you wet the sponge then add oil, it stays wet. - The Order: Liquid.. Leave-in.. Oil (L.L.O. Method). 2. Steam is Your Secret Weapon 🧖🏾‍♀️ You put conditioner on, waited 5 minutes, and rinsed it out? That wasn't enough! Low porosity hair (which many of us have) needs heat to open up the cuticle so the conditioner can actually get inside. - The Fix: On wash day, put on a plastic processing cap and sit under a hooded dryer (or use a steamer) for at least 15-20 minutes. That deep penetration changes everything. 3. Let the Dead Ends GO ✂️ I know you want to keep the length, but holding onto split ends is like holding onto a toxic ex—it’s only going to drain you! Split ends don't stay at the end; they travel up the hair shaft and break the healthy hair off. - The Fix: If it’s see-through, rough, or tangling constantly... cut it. Healthy short hair grows fast. Raggedy long hair breaks faster. 4. Cotton is the Enemy 🛑 You spend all that time moisturizing, only to lay your head on a cotton pillowcase that sucks the moisture right back out while you sleep. - The Fix: Satin or Silk only. Bonnet, scarf, or pillowcase. This is non-negotiable! If you wake up and your bonnet is on the floor... get a tighter band, sis! 😂
