My story, Monday
Long ago, when I was just barely 14 my mother decided I was hypoglycemic. She had been reading a book about it and she was sure that my health issues were caused by my not too great diet. She discussed it with me…told me the way it worked and explained why she believed this was my problem. I did not have a real good immune system. If anyone at school got sick ( and there were always sick kids in the fall and winter months) I got sick and missed school. She put me on a diet of 5 small meals a day that were a good amount of protein, lots of low glycemic vegetables, and good healthy fats- even known at that time. She made my meals up in advance, she was meal prepping even then. She also made a deal with me that if I stayed on the plan at the end of the month she would take me to eat anywhere I wanted and I could have anything that day. But the next day it was right back on the plan. That was the way it went every month This started the first of September. She said we could eat carefully that Thanksgiving on the day and then the next day….right back on the plan. And the week before Christmas we would eat as we always had. She loved to make Christmas candy, pumpkin and banana breads, and Christmas cookies. She usually started at Thanksgiving and cooked and baked all through Christmas. She had come to believe this was what made me so sick through February. Colds and flu and anything else going around. But this time the day after Christmas I went back on the plan.
Before this time I was rather a cube shaped kid. I did have boobs but I had no waistline. Well, by Christmas I had to get new clothes. At the holiday gatherings I could hear the whispers of relatives “is that LaVonna?”
I know this might sound abusive but it was not, those days of getting to eat whatever I wanted taught me how bad those foods made me feel. Through the holidays I stuck to the plan with just a bit of splurge because I knew I felt better on my eating plan.
It did not completely fix my health because I was not as aware of the supplements I needed and in the years that followed I took supplements that did really make it so I did not ever get sick.
What was cut out of my diet? SUGAR, bread, white potatoes, pasta, rice. The same diet
I follow today. After my health was better I did add some back. Not bread but occasional rice, pasta, potatoes. But that was years later. Teenagers do need glucose but that can come from healthier carbs. Sweet potatoes, corn, carrots. Small amounts of fruit. Fats - healthy fats are very important for the developing brain. Protein is very important.
I hope this gives you something to think about this holiday season. It really applies to everyone not just kids. But it benefits them too.
