First off, I never use shampoo, conditioner, dye, or styling products. I think putting poisons on your head is crazy! That's just me though haha ;-)
Nonetheless, I love my long dark hair, so I use these practices to keep it thick and healthy, naturally:
1. Every night, before bed, I use a sandalwood comb and follow a technique I learned from Traditional Chinese Medicine to stimulate the many acupressure points on the scalp. This also stimulates circulation and helps distribute natural protective oils from the root down the length of the hair.
BONUS: This is my favorite part of my bedtime routine! Combing out the hair helps to dangle the mind and release stress and worries. It's a great way to release the cares of the day. Plus it feels so good, it really helps me unwind and get ready for rest.
2. About once a week, I treat myself to a scalp treatment. I make a homemade blend of heavy, nutrient-rich oils and essential oils and apply it generously to my entire scalp, then massage it in, using my nails to help stimulate circulation and increase penetration of the oils.
If possible, I do this before being exposed to heat or sunlight to enhance absorption. So, if I'm going to go hiking or sunbathe or if I'm taking a hot bath or using the sauna, I'll apply the oil first so it can really sink in.
Here's the recipe for the blend I'm using currently:
Base oil blend:
- Sesame Oil
- Jojoba Oil
- Argan Oil
- Black Seed Oil
Essential oils:
- Rosemary
- Ylang Ylang
- Lavender
- Peppermint
- Cedarwood
- Rose
- Frankincense
Use a glass pump bottle for easy application!! Part your hair down the middle and apply oil generously to the part. Then do the same with side parts on either side and a few lines down the back of your head until your scalp is entirely covered and then enjoy working the oils into your scalp. It's so indulgent! It's more of a treat than a chore! :)
3. Sometimes the end of my hair gets dry and dull. When the ends look ready for a trim, instead of reaching for the scissors, I apply a blend of light, moisturizing oils and essential oils to bring my hair back to life.
Right now I'm using this blend:
Base oil blend:
- Jojoba Oil
- Olive Oil
- Argan Oil
- Evening Primrose Oil
Essential oils:
- Rose
- Gardenia
- Lavender
- Ylang Ylang
- Geranium
- Patchouli
I actually formulated this blend to use on my face - and I still do! - but I love the fragrance so much that I'm using it on my hair. I always opt for essential oils that I really love the smell of for this blend because I have long hair so whatever I put on the ends, I'm going to be smelling all day long.
I like to use a pump bottle for this one, too. Gather your hair, squirt the oil on the last few inches, and then massage it into your hair, working towards the ends.
