When Thinking Harder Stops Working
Lately, I noticed myself feeling more anxious than usual.
Not overwhelmed. Not falling apart. Just tighter. Mentally busier. Less internal space.
What surprised me was that nothing was actually wrong. Work was moving. Life was full but contained. From the outside, everything looked fine.
And that’s when it clicked.
For many high-performing women, anxiety isn’t a mindset issue. It’s a state issue. The brain gets stuck in problem-solving mode for too long and starts working against itself.
Thinking harder doesn’t fix that. It often makes it worse.
This is what sent me back to creativity, not as expression or output, but as regulation. A way of changing how the brain is operating, not what it’s thinking about.
I’ve since woven this into how we teach at VANTA, alongside strength, conditioning, recovery, and sleep. Because a regulated nervous system isn’t built by willpower. It’s built by learning how to shift state.
I’ve written a longer piece on how creativity reduces anxiety, why this matters in midlife, and how to use it in a practical, grounded way.
