Top 10 Tips For Open Mic Nights
Open mic night tips
  1. Learn 10 -20 most popular songs - Brown Eyed Girl, Wagon Wheel, Tennessee Whiskey, Something in the Orange, etc… and/or pick songs you and your friends know or songs that are popular where you live…
  2. Invite your friends whether musicians or not, they can encourage you, pick on you (to keep you humble, etc)
  3. Don’t drink before you play, you may think you sound better, but you probably don’t (if you drink)
  4. Only play a 2 or 3 songs and then get off the bandstand, unless they invite you to stay or to come back up later
  5. Always encourage other musicians who “get up there” - keeping in mind what goes around comes around, and its better to lift others up rather than tear them down - most will return the favor
  6. Stay humble
  7. Don't be afraid to ask what key they are playing in, if someone else "calls a tune"
  8. Practice ear training when ever you can - so that you can improve your ears - very much needed to play with other musicians, especially if someone calls a tune you don't know yet (do a search here in the group, I've talked about this before)
  9. Take a tablet (iPad) or phone with you, if you need to look up the chords real quick
  10. Have fun!
