Is 화장하다 the standard phrase for "to put on make up"?

I previously learned another verb 바르다 which means "to apply" as in 선크름을 발라요. Can I say 화장을 발라요 or the commonly used phrase is 화장해요 or 화장을 해요? 감사합나다 선생님!
