6 of Cups
If you didn’t know, I’m Swedish and moved to Spain 6 1/2 years ago (my Spanish is still not what I wish it was). But I’ve been thinking about two things.
The first is that learning to read Tarot, to me, is a bit like learning a new language. Every card carries a word, and that word can also expand into synonyms and different shades of meaning. Reading cards together is a little like solving a riddle or a rebus, one word from each card creating a sentence. Sometimes we have to turn those words around, look at them from another angle, and let them shift until the right meaning appears.
Starting by learning one word for each card is a good beginning, just like learning single words in a new language before slowly building sentences. I’ve been thinking about this a lot while trying to learn Spanish, because in many ways it feels similar to learning Tarot. First come the words, then the sentences, and after that, the next step is learning to hold simple conversations — until eventually we find the rhythm that allows us to go deeper.
The second thing on my mind right now, and the reason I chose both the song and the card 6 of Cups, is that we Swedes celebrate Midsummer on June 19–20. It’s a weekend when family and friends gather, eat traditional Midsummer food (among other things potatoes and pickled herring, and of course strawberries), spend time together, and celebrate summer.
To me, the 6 of Cups is the little family card, a card about loving togetherness with those closest to us. It’s a sweet card, full of warmth and joy.
In The Rune Witch Tarot, this card also carries Jupiter in Scorpio to show deep connection and togetherness, Dagaz/Bjarkaz as a bindrune to represent insight and roots, and Chrysopal to reflect a deep spiritual feeling of love. Together, they offer a wholeness of feeling that can help you heal yourself and release prejudice, limitations, and fears around other people. Yiang Green/Turquoise is there to show harmony and change, and Rose to represent love. The power animal is the Iguana, symbolizing closeness and nearness.
Here in Spain, Midsummer itself isn’t celebrated in the same way, but San Juan (St. John the Baptist) is celebrated on June 23. That’s when I walk seven steps backward into the water (the pool) to release things from the past year, and then seven steps back up out of the water — after dipping my whole body beneath it — while making seven wishes for the year ahead.
I like traditions, and I find that energy not only in the 6 of Cups, but also in V The Pope.
Which Tarot card speaks of tradition to you?
