How to Start the Day
The Buddha said something once that I've never forgotten 🙏
He said.... When the sun rises, don't waste the morning.
That's it. That's the whole teaching. But sit with it for a moment.
Don't waste the morning.
Not because mornings are special.
Not because there's some magic in the first light.
But because the morning is when we decide what kind of day we're going to have.
It's when we set the direction.
It's when we choose what we're going to carry and what we're going to put down.
The Buddha wasn't talking about productivity.
He wasn't saying, get more done before noon.
He was saying something deeper.
He was saying..... pay attention to how you begin, because how you begin shapes everything that follows.
If you wake up and immediately reach for the phone, you've already handed your mind over to the world. If you wake up and immediately start rehearsing your worries, you've already decided what today will be about.
But if you wake up and take one breath, just one, before you do anything else, you've done something radical. You've claimed the first moment for yourself. You've reminded yourself that you're here. That you have a choice.
The Buddha said that a single day of awareness is worth more than a hundred years of distraction.
One day.
Not a lifetime.
Not a retreat.
Just today.
That's the practice.
Not being perfect.
Not getting it all right.
Just remembering, when the sun comes up, that you have a choice.
And choosing, again and again, to show up for your own life.
So this morning, before you do anything else, take one breath.
Notice that you're awake.
Notice that you have another day.
Notice that it's not promised to anyone, and that today is the only one you've got.
Then step into it.
Gently.
Deliberately.
Don't waste the morning.
With love❤️
always
