from Britannica: "bard, a poet, especially one who writes impassioned, lyrical, or epic verse. Bards were originally Celtic composers of eulogy and satire; the word came to mean more generally a tribal poet-singer gifted in composing and reciting verses on heroes and their deeds."
Can you be a singer, but not a songwriter? You can. Some have. But...
What if you also wrote music and lyrics? Would that make you a bard? Maybe.
I've written some songs with lyrics. I've written some lyrics without music. I've written music without lyrics.
My study of music and chords started around 1965. I immediately started putting chord progressions and melodies to paper. WAY before the computer age, it was. I write music most days. It is a continuous learning experience. I was self-taught on midi sequencing, but wrote arrangements with manuscript paper and a pencil. Big band arrangements were fairly easy, after a 10 minute conversation with my high school band director in about 1968. Yes. The knowledge comes from some place.
I learned some arranging techniques from my band director and later from Don Hannah, a top arranger in Las Vegas. I learned music copying from Lloyd Luhman and Bill Trujillo in Las Vegas. I learned to play Tommy Dorsey style trombone from Art Sayres in Las Vegas. Singing riffs from Kelly Connelly who sang, toured, performed with Gladys Knight and the Pips. Vocal technique from the top vocal coaches in L.A. and Las Vegas. Knowledge comes from some place or person. I admit that my sources are stellar! Trombone technique from Dr. Donald S. Reinhardt in Philadelphia in the 1970s. Can't leave him out. Turned me into a powerful lead trombone player with an extreme high range.
What's the point? I did some songwriting with John Boice. Not collaborations. He showed me a couple of things. He toured with Buddy Rich and Ray Charles. We got to be close friends, John and I. Mutual admiration society of each others' works, we had. So, who you spend time with can have a positive effect. That's the point.
Here's a song that turned out well featuring a fabulous flute player from Latvia, Beate Matvejeva. She played it ONCE and I recorded her with my song, Autumn Sun. Here. Anyone can write music, if they learn and try. I can help anyone who wants to be a bard. Ready?
