Should I be the BOSS or play the FRIEND?
When I first became a manager, I was lost. I wanted to find my own way, but I had no idea what was right or wrong. I saw so many different leadership styles. Some leaders were tough, some were friendly, some were strict, some were relaxed. So I tried copying them.
I’d watch a leader I admired, repeat exactly what they said, do exactly what they did, but it never felt like me. It came off generic, forced, and fake. And guess what? My team could tell. They didn’t buy into it. They didn’t follow me.
People always say, Find a role model. But that was the hardest part because everyone is good at something. So who was I supposed to model?
After years of managing people, I finally figured it out: You have to find your own way. But before you can do that, you need the right role model someone whose leadership style feels natural to you.
Instead of copying just any leader, find one who aligns with your personality and the kind of leader you want to become. Mirror them. Adapt their approach to fit your strengths.
And here’s the magic: Over time, you’ll identify your strengths and you’ll start tweaking their style. You’ll make it your own. And that’s when leadership clicks. It stops feeling forced. It becomes effortless. Your team follows you because they trust you, because it’s the real you.
So if you’re struggling with leadership whether it’s getting your team to listen, take ownership, or respect your authority, drop your biggest challenge in the comments.
I’ll be answering questions and helping you break through whatever is holding you back. (NO CHILLIN!)
