Mason Jars for dry storage
Not just for canning - mason jars are also great for freezing and dry storage. Because they're tempered glass, they freeze and take heat very well.
I'll can tomatoes when I get a bushel or more. I have a jar of bacon grease in the refrigerator. And when the spaghetti sauce is too much for to save as leftover (makes 6 or more meals) then I'll freeze it.
Mostly I use them for dry storage of oatmeal, bread crumbs, custom dry mixes. Because oatmeal and bread crumbs are packaged in cardboard containers they're easily susceptible to moisture and accessible to bugs. And the cost of mason jars...quart or pint...is less expensive than the equivalent number of glass containers (Pyrex for example).
