Chain Maintenance 101: The Stuff Your Manual Didn't Make Clear
Let's talk chains. If you have a chain-driven bike, this is probably the most neglected maintenance item.
HOW OFTEN TO CLEAN/LUBE:
  • Every 300–500 miles in good conditions
  • After EVERY ride in rain
  • More often if you ride dusty roads
HOW TO CHECK CHAIN TENSION:
  1. Put bike upright
  2. Find middle of chain
  3. Push up with finger
  4. Measure slack
  5. Most bikes want 1–1.5 inches
Too tight = premature wearToo loose = dangerous
CLEANING TIPS:
  • Use kerosene or chain cleaner
  • Use a chain brush
  • Clean BEFORE lubing
LUBING TIPS:
  • Apply to inside of chain
  • Spin wheel while applying
  • Let sit 15 mins
  • Wipe excess
What do you use for chain lube? Any horror stories? 👇
