Chain Maintenance 101: The Stuff Your Manual Didn't Make Clear
Let's talk chains. If you have a chain-driven bike, this is probably the most neglected maintenance item.
HOW OFTEN TO CLEAN/LUBE:
- Every 300–500 miles in good conditions
- After EVERY ride in rain
- More often if you ride dusty roads
HOW TO CHECK CHAIN TENSION:
- Put bike upright
- Find middle of chain
- Push up with finger
- Measure slack
- Most bikes want 1–1.5 inches
Too tight = premature wearToo loose = dangerous
CLEANING TIPS:
- Use kerosene or chain cleaner
- Use a chain brush
- Clean BEFORE lubing
LUBING TIPS:
- Apply to inside of chain
- Spin wheel while applying
- Let sit 15 mins
- Wipe excess
