Episode 1- of “It’s All About the Point One,” (AA.1)
Issue: Proper Cleaning
Today we’re addressing ways that childcare providers can ensure a clean and sanitary care facility. Now let’s dive right into some solutions to tackle this problem head-on.
First and foremost, thank you all for joining and listening to “It’s All About the Point One.” So, without further ado, let’s begin. Maintaining a clean environment is paramount in childcare facilities due to various reasons. Regular cleaning helps prevents the spread of germs and infectious diseases among children and staff. It also promotes healthy habits and creates a safe and comfortable atmosphere for children to thrive in.
Children are so susceptible to germs and infections nowadays that cleaning and disinfecting are not urged enough as they should be. Now, let’s discuss some of the reasons why some childcare providers may not wash their facilities daily. But what are the challenges they face?
There are several challenges that childcare providers face day-to-day when it comes to maintaining a clean facility. For the most part, it’s the lack of resources, staff, and a lack of awareness about proper cleaning practices. It’s important to know the differences between cleaning, sanitizing, and disinfecting. Although they all do the same thing; make a surface clean, it’s much more complex than you think.
According to the CDC, “Cleaning with commercial cleaners that contain soap or detergent decreases the number of germs on surfaces and reduces risk of infection from surfaces in your facility.” Where it gets deeper is at sanitizing. Sanitizing “reduces the remaining germs on surfaces after cleaning.” And last but not least, disinfecting. Disinfecting “reduces the remaining germs on surfaces after cleaning.” And “by killing germs on a surface after cleaning, disinfecting can further lower the risk of spreading disease.”
There are many things we can do going forward that childcare providers can do to ensure that their facilities are in tip-top clean shape. Let’s discuss some solutions.
Firstly, it’s essential to raise awareness among childcare providers about the importance of daily facility washing. This can be achieved through training sessions and workshops that emphasize the impact of cleanliness on children’s health. Additionally, creating a checklist or schedule for cleaning tasks can help providers establish a routine and allocate specific responsibilities to staff members.
Another strategy is to involve parents or guardians in the process. Providers can create a culture of cleanliness by encouraging parents to participate in cleaning activities or organizing occasional cleaning days where everyone pitches in. This not only helps maintain cleanliness but also fosters a sense of community and shared responsibility. Additionally, providers should ensure they have access to sufficient cleaning supplies and equipment, and they should allocate time in their schedules specifically for cleaning duties.
A 3rd strategy that can be implemented is involving everyone and creating a collaborative approach, like that, we can make significant improvements. There are guidelines and regulations that childcare providers should follow regarding facility cleanliness.
And lastly, childcare providers must adhere to specific guidelines and regulations regarding cleanliness and hygiene. Providers must familiarize themselves with local licensing requirements and regulations related to facility cleanliness. These regulations often provide detailed guidelines on cleaning routines, disinfection practices, and the use of appropriate cleaning products. Staying informed and following these guidelines ensures that providers are maintaining a clean and safe environment for the children.
As we wrap up our discussion, some advice I have for parents who may be concerned about the cleanliness of their child's childcare facility.
If parents have concerns about the cleanliness of their child's childcare facility, the first step is to communicate those concerns with the provider. An open and honest conversation can help address any issues or misunderstandings. If the concerns persist or if the provider is unresponsive, parents should consider reaching out to local regulatory agencies or licensing authorities to report their concerns. These agencies can investigate and provide appropriate guidance.
