Protein isn't optional in recovery.
Protein isn't optional in recovery.
It's the foundation. Let's talk about something most people completely overlook after surgery — and it's costing them their results. Protein. Your body just went through serious trauma. Tissue was cut, moved, and sutured back together. Skin is stretching. Swelling is happening. Your immune system is working overtime. And all of that repair? It runs on protein.
Here's what happens when you don't eat enough protein post-op:
❌ Slower wound healing
❌ Increased risk of infection
❌ More swelling that lingers longer
❌ Muscle loss while your body is already weakened
❌ Fatigue that drags on for weeks
Here's what adequate protein does:
✅ Rebuilds tissue and supports wound closure
✅ Reduces inflammation faster
✅ Maintains muscle while your body heals
✅ Supports your immune system
✅ Gives you energy to actually recover
How much do you need? Most post-surgical patients should aim for 0.7 to 1 gram of protein per pound of body weight daily. That's higher than your normal intake — because your body's demands are higher.
Easy sources:
• Chicken, turkey, fish
• Eggs and egg whites
• Greek yogurt
• Protein shakes (easy on the stomach post-op)
• Cottage cheese
• Bone broth
Start hitting your protein goals the day you're cleared to eat. Don't wait until you feel strong enough — protein is part of what gets you there.
