It's so easy in our conversations to focus on what we want to say, crafting our responses while our partner is still speaking. We've all been guilty of nodding along while mentally preparing our rebuttal, or even worse—interrupting, thinking our point simply cannot wait. This habit can create a cycle where each person feels they must fight to have their voice truly heard.
James 1:19 reminds us to be "quick to listen, slow to speak," which is a call to genuinely hear our partner's heart before rushing to respond. Active listening isn't only about the words spoken—it's about understanding the emotions and intentions behind those words, too.
Check-in: Reflect on a recent conversation where you were more focused on your reply than your partner's words. What fears or assumptions were driving you to respond quickly rather than truly listening? How might your relationship shift if you leaned into listening with grace and patience?
