Setting a Realistic Chess Goal for the New Year
HAPPY NEW YEAR
How I’m thinking about improvement this year
Assess your baseline & set smart goals
  1. Current Rating
  2. Strengths and weaknesses
  3. Opening tree analysis (win rate as White / Black) (win rate against specific openings)
  4. Identify biggest Elo opportunities (weakest areas where improvement will yield the most gain)
  1. Set realistic yearly goal → break into monthly chunks (+300 elo in a year → +25 elo per month)
  2. Beginners = bigger goals, intermediate = smaller goals
  3. Focus on weaknesses, not strengths (study areas where your win rate is <50%)
Examples
Beginner (<800) = Gain 200-400
Advanced Beginner (800-1200) = Gain 100-300
Intermediate (1200-1600) = Gain 100-200
My personal example of this past years improvements
1234→1535 = +301
Targeted weaknesses : Focus on openings and situations where my win rate was <50%
Tactics Practice : Mixture of difficult puzzles that are difficult to calculate, and easy puzzles that I can solve quickly.
Reviewed losses instead of wins : Tried to learn one thing from every loss.
