Beginner Prepper’s Journey: Week 3 – Water Preparedness 🚰
Welcome to Week 3: Securing and Purifying Water
I hope last week was productive as you built your 72-hour kit! Remember, if you’re new to Skool, be sure to start from Week 1 so you don’t miss any critical steps. This week, we’ll dive into one of the most important aspects of survival: water preparedness.
Water is essential for life, and having a plan to secure, store, and purify water during an emergency is critical for long-term survival. Let’s make sure you’re prepared!
Why Water Preparedness Matters
  • The human body can only survive about three days without water.
  • In emergencies, access to clean water can be disrupted, so knowing how to store and purify water is vital.
  • Water is not just for drinking; you’ll need it for cooking, hygiene, and first aid.
Tasks for Week 3
1. Calculate Your Water Needs
  • Plan for at least 1 gallon per person per day for drinking and basic needs.
  • Multiply this by the number of people in your household and the number of days you want to prepare for (start with 3 days, then build up).
2. Start Storing Water
  • Clean Containers: Use food-grade containers, cleaned with soap and water.
  • Store Safely: Keep water in a cool, dark place away from chemicals.
  • Label and Date: Mark containers with the date of storage to track freshness.
3. Learn Water Purification Methods
  • Boiling: The simplest and most reliable method. Boil water for at least 1 minute.
  • Filtration Systems: Invest in a portable water filter like a LifeStraw or Berkey system.
  • Chemical Treatment: Use water purification tablets or unscented household bleach (4-6 drops per gallon of water).
  • DIY Tips: Learn how to make a basic sand or charcoal filter.
4. Test Your Plan
  • Spend one day using only stored or purified water. Note any challenges and adjust your plan as needed.
  • Share your experiences and tips in the community to help others.
💡 Tips for Success
  • Start Small: Even a few gallons of water storage can make a difference. Build up over time.
  • Think Versatility: Have multiple purification methods on hand for different scenarios.
  • Rotate Regularly: Replace stored water every 6 months to ensure freshness.
🤔 Reflection Questions
At the end of the week, reflect on:
  1. How much water does your household realistically need?
  2. What was the easiest method of purification for you to use?
  3. What improvements can you make to your water preparedness plan?
Write your answers in your journal to stay accountable and track your progress.
🗓️ Next Week: Get ready to focus on building a basic emergency food stockpile to complement your water preparedness plan!
