“Courage is not simply one of the virtues but the form of every virtue at the testing point, which means at the point of highest reality.” — C.S. Lewis, The Screwtape Letters
I think Lewis is reminding us that courage becomes most visible when something important is actually being tested.
It is easy to talk about patience when life is going well. It is harder to practice patience when you are exhausted. It is easy to talk about hope when the future feels certain. It takes courage to hold onto hope when you do not know what comes next.
Hard seasons give us those testing points.
And courage does not always look dramatic. Sometimes it is getting out of bed and facing another day. Sometimes it is asking for help. Having an honest conversation. Showing up for your family. Finishing one responsibility. Taking care of yourself. Or simply deciding that a difficult season will not get the final word.
You do not have to feel fearless to act courageously.
Where is life asking you to practice courage right now?
