Be The Song: Write Your Life
Some of the very best and worst advice I’ve ever gotten regarding songwriting has come from my father who is a lifelong farmer and nothing else. Many of my early songs were love songs that he couldn’t relate to and he encouraged me to write about real life not just fantasy love. This tidbit of advice has turned out to be a gold mine that just keeps giving and giving.
After returning to our multigenerational family farm in Western Kansas, after leaving Los Angeles with my newly found fiancé, I started writing about life on the farm and it’s challenges joys and shared experiences across this nation and abroad. This open doors to perform for women in agricultural groups Farm Bureau meetings for each gatherings, the county, fair and many other stages that wouldn’t for any other topic except agriculture. This is one small example of how honing in on a lifestyle can instantly appeal to a wide group of people.
Let’s discuss how you choose the topics of your songs. Did anybody else start with a long string of love songs before waiting into more practical real world topics?
