Dancing Through Change (Journey Through Perimenopause)
As the sun dipped below the horizon, casting a warm golden hue across the living room, I sat on my favorite pillow, breathing deeply. As I embarked on my 40s, and when my birthday came, an unexpected wave of emotions and physical changes left me feeling adrift. The onset of perimenopause brought with it sleepless nights and unpredictable moods, transforming my once vibrant energy into a kaleidoscope of confusion. I have always been an active person, but as the months slipped by, I found myself struggling with the changes in my body. The weight gain, the hot flashes, and the relentless fatigue began to overshadow my happiness and joy.
It was during a particularly restless night, tossing and turning, that I stumbled upon a book about somatic movement. Intrigued, I decided to give it a try, hoping it would help me navigate this new chapter of my life. The next morning, I rolled out my mat, feeling both hesitant and hopeful. I closed my eyes and listened to the gentle rhythm of my breath, letting it guide me. I began to sway my body, allowing my hips to move freely, feeling the tension release with each undulating motion. As I danced, I began to tune in to my body’s sensations—the warmth of my skin, the tightness in my shoulders, the flutter in my stomach. With each session, I learned to embrace the changes within myself. I moved through frustration, sadness, and confusion, transforming them into fluid movement.
The somatic practice became a sanctuary where I could explore my feelings without judgment. I would sway, twist, and stretch to Blues, R&B, Classic, and Erotic Sex music, allowing my body to articulate what words and sounds sometimes could not. It was a conversation with myself, one that revealed buried fears and desires. One afternoon, as I danced in my living room, I noticed a shift. The weight that had felt so heavy began to feel lighter. I realized that the changes I had been resisting were, in fact, invitations to redefine my relationship with myself. The hot flashes became moments of surrender, the mood swings transformed into opportunities for self-compassion. I learned to embrace my body’s wisdom, moving with it rather than against it. In time, I discovered a community of women who shared similar experiences. Together, they practiced somatic movement in a local studio, creating a space of support and understanding. They laughed, cried, and danced together, celebrating each other’s journeys. The collective energy of the group further fueled my transformation, reminding me that I was not alone in this journey of change.
Months later, I stood before my mirror, a smile spreading across my face. I had found a new rhythm within myself, one that embraced the ebbs and flows of life. The journey through perimenopause had been challenging, but it had also birthed resilience and empowerment. I had learned to trust my body, to listen to its needs, and to celebrate the strength that came with each new day. As I moved gracefully across the dance floor, I realized that this was not an end but a beginning—a dance of change that would continue to evolve throughout my life. With each step, I felt more connected to myself and the woman that I am now becoming, ready to embrace whatever came next with grace and courage.
